About the company
Engelhart, established in 2013 by the BTG Pactual Group, operates as a diversified commodities trading firm with an asset-light approach that helps it respond quickly to shifting market conditions. The company combines fundamental analysis with advanced quantitative and weather research, supported by strong risk controls, technology, and operational discipline. Its teams bring together international experience and a collaborative mindset across different products and skill areas.
In 2024, Engelhart completed the acquisition of Trailstone, a global energy trading and technology business. This added new analytics, proprietary technology, and expertise that support risk management and optimisation services for renewable power. The acquisition also broadened Engelhart’s reach into physical natural gas in North America, which plays an important role in the energy transition.
The organisation is guided by four core values: performance, agility, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
Role overview
The team develops and runs systematic trading strategies in short-term power markets across multiple regions. In many markets, trading algorithms are a key part of integrating intermittent renewable generation into the grid, and the pricing and liquidity they create help enable the renewable transition. The role offers exposure across the full algorithmic trading lifecycle, including automated trading systems, machine learning operations, DevOps, backtest infrastructure, data engineering, and reporting tools. The main emphasis will be on platform engineering and technical operations.
This role is based in Berlin.
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain a Python-based trading platform for continuous and day-ahead power markets, covering signal generation, backtesting, and execution logic.
- Help design data systems that support fast, low-latency retrieval, ideally within seconds.
- Take live trading algorithms into production and keep them monitored once deployed.
- Apply sound software engineering practices to create systems that are scalable, reliable, and easy to test.
- Partner closely with quantitative researchers, traders, and risk specialists to move ideas into production strategies.
- Contribute to the company’s growth into additional business areas.
- Tackle technical work such as performance tuning, cloud-native application development, and building flexible reporting and visualization tools.
What we're looking for
- At least 2 years of experience working as a Python developer.
- Strong foundations in software engineering, including object-oriented and functional approaches, modular design, and a good understanding of data structures and algorithms.
- Hands-on familiarity with development practices such as version control, code review, automated testing, documentation, and CI/CD.
- Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to operational excellence.
- Experience validating and deploying quantitative models, such as prediction, optimization, uncertainty quantification, or performance attribution models.
Nice to have
- Background in software engineering or data science within financial services or energy trading.
- Experience using Python scientific libraries such as NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn, or Polars.
- Exposure to time-series databases, Airflow, and containerised cloud deployments.
- Knowledge of at least one statically typed programming language.
- Working knowledge of SQL.
What we offer
- Competitive pay plus eligibility for Engelhart’s discretionary bonus plan.
- 28 days of annual leave in addition to Berlin public holidays.
- €3,000 per year contributed toward a private pension plan.
- €20 per month subsidy for BVG tickets.
- €25 per month subsidy for a ClassPass membership.
- Support for German language courses to help with local integration.
- A friendly, social workplace with an open international culture.
Inclusion
Engelhart states that it is committed to an inclusive environment where employees are welcomed and respected regardless of gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, life experience, or background. The company sees diversity as essential to broad, balanced thinking.
