About the Role

Protective Services operates around the clock to provide security and safety within healthcare facilities, employing sworn Community Peace Officers dedicated to protecting patients, visitors, and staff. Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide security and protection for patients, visitors, personnel, and assets at AHS facilities.

  • Enforce federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulations relevant to healthcare settings.
  • Prevent asset loss and conduct internal investigations when necessary.
  • Prepare legal documents and secure evidence for judicial proceedings.
  • Identify risks and hazards to prevent incidents.
  • Carry out arrests, detentions, and apprehensions, serving as a first responder to critical events.
  • Support various facility departments regarding security and safety protocols.
  • Participate in policy review and recommend improvements.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Eligibility or active appointment as a Community Peace Officer with public enforcement duties as recognized by Alberta authorities.
  • Completion of Alberta Health Services or Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Community Peace Officer Induction Training Program (6 weeks).
  • Valid Class 5 non-GDL driver’s license with no more than four demerits, no pending charges or suspensions.
  • Valid Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) completed within the last six months, under 4 minutes 45 seconds.
  • Eligible to maintain appointment; past criminal convictions without pardon or misconduct may disqualify.

Preferred Experience and Certifications

  • At least two years of related work experience, or relevant degree or diploma.
  • Experience in uniformed public safety roles or emergency services such as military, forestry, park ranger, corrections, or peace officer positions.
  • Training in CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention and Pressure Point Control Tactic preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare environments is an asset.
  • Current certification in First Aid & CPR Level C with AED.

Work Conditions and Schedule

  • Full-time position based at Slave Lake Healthcare Centre with 12-hour shifts.
  • Rotation pattern of 4 days on, 4 days off covering days, evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call duties.
  • A vehicle will be provided; valid driver’s license required.
