Role Overview
HMP Bullingdon is seeking an Operational Support Grade to assist with the daily functions of a bustling prison facility. This dynamic position involves a mix of office-based duties and physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles across the prison premises. Key responsibilities include gate security, conducting searches, managing deliveries, supervising visitor access, and monitoring phone communications and CCTV systems.
Location and Transportation
The prison is located in a rural area, potentially limiting public transport options. While owning a vehicle and possessing a driving license is advantageous, it is not strictly mandatory unless otherwise specified. Candidates must maintain punctuality as shift timings are fixed, and reliable transport arrangements are essential.
Driving License Requirement
Applicants must hold a valid UK full driving license that includes the D1 category, permitting the operation of vehicles carrying up to 16 passengers, with a maximum length of 8 metres, and the ability to tow trailers up to 750kg.
Candidate Profile
No formal qualifications are necessary. Ideal candidates will be strong communicators, able to maintain composure under stress, possess sound judgment, common sense, and excel in collaborative teamwork. The job entails working variable shifts, including nights and weekends.
Career and Benefits
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety and make a real difference within the correctional system. Interaction with prisoners is limited but present depending on the facility. The position provides valuable insights into prison operations and potential avenues for career growth, including transitioning to a Prison Officer role through conversion schemes.
Compensation and Perks
- Starting salary of 29,432 per annum
- 25 days of annual leave initially, increasing to 30 days after ten years of service (pro-rated)
- 9 additional bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Enrollment options in the Civil Service pension scheme
- Employee benefits such as season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in a Cycle to Work scheme
Additional Information
Shift patterns include weekend and night duties, and punctuality is strictly required due to fixed shift times. Reliable transport arrangements should be planned carefully considering the rural location.
