About the role
This Wellington-based fixed-term or secondment role runs through 30 July 2027 and is focused on providing strategic leadership and high-quality advice within Business Operations. The position sits in a fast-moving environment where you will help translate policy into practical delivery, lead complex initiatives, and shape solutions that improve outcomes for ākonga.
What you’ll do
- Lead, define, and deliver complicated, high-impact pieces of work, turning policy intent into operational action.
- Prepare clear, persuasive advice for senior leaders on risks, priorities, and emerging issues.
- Partner across the Ministry and with external stakeholders to design and implement workable solutions.
- Apply data, evidence, and insight to support decisions, track performance, and improve results over time.
What we’re looking for
You will be a strategic thinker and trusted adviser who is comfortable working through ambiguity and turning it into practical recommendations for senior decision-makers. The role calls for strong judgement, influence, and credibility, along with the ability to work collaboratively in complex settings.
- Demonstrated experience leading and delivering complex, high-impact work programmes, backed by strong written communication.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to influence and bring different perspectives together.
- Advanced analytical capability, using evidence and insight to identify risks and opportunities and inform decisions.
- Critical thinking, resilience, intellectual leadership, and sound judgement in demanding, fast-paced environments.
- Willingness and ability to uphold Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About the team
You’ll be joining Te Poutāhū, which leads the national curriculum for Aotearoa New Zealand and the related assessment and aromatawai systems. The group develops curriculum services for teachers, kaiako, leaders, ākonga, whānau, and communities, with a strong focus on inclusive curriculum, assessment, and NCEA. Their work draws on te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, disability, inclusive learning support, and culturally relevant content, with Te Mahau helping connect with the sector to identify priorities and shape local solutions.
