Job Overview

The Painter operates under general supervision to prepare and paint various surfaces including buildings, equipment, and furniture, ensuring quality application and surface preparation.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute both general and specialized painting tasks using established trade practices and techniques.
• Accurately estimate and procure the required materials for each job assignment.
• Adhere strictly to safety guidelines and risk management protocols during all phases of work.
• Prepare surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, cleaning, and applying protective coverings such as tape and drop cloths.
• Mix paints, varnishes, lacquers, and enamels to achieve desired colors and finishes.
• Set up and dismantle scaffolding and ladders safely and efficiently.
• Carry out other painting-related duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

• Proficient in painting principles, techniques, and safely mixing paint colors.
• Skilled in surface preparation including applying primers, sealers, and undercoats.
• Competent in operating painting equipment and tools.
• Capable of consistently applying paint evenly across walls, ceilings, and various surfaces.
• Able to paint overhead and at elevated heights using ladders and scaffolding.
• Effective communication skills and ability to interact professionally with university community and public.
• Ability to interpret and follow written instructions and safety procedures.
• Physically able to perform demanding tasks including working in challenging weather conditions and being on-call when required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or an equivalent credential.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Experience with both exterior and interior painting on various surfaces such as metal, porous, and finished materials.
• Familiarity with sheet rock, plaster, and multiple surface preparation methods.
• Committed to wearing appropriate personal protective equipment including safety shoes, hearing, and eye protection.

Physical Demands

• Capable of medium physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
• Ability to bend, twist, and lift weights up to 100 pounds.
• Comfortable with heights and working on elevations up to 60 feet.
• Experience working on ladders and mechanical lifts.
