Role Overview
The Optometry Assistant plays a key role in supporting optometrists and the clinical staff by delivering top-quality patient care, assisting during eye examinations, and ensuring efficient clinical operations. This patient-facing position requires attention to detail and is essential to providing an excellent patient experience throughout their visit.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome and prepare patients for eye exams
- Collect patient histories, evaluate visual acuity, and conduct preliminary tests
- Assist optometrists during exams and procedures
- Educate patients about eye health, treatment recommendations, and eyewear choices
- Administer eye drops and support contact lens training as qualified
- Perform pre-testing procedures including auto-refraction, tonometry, retinal imaging, and visual fields
- Maintain, cleanse, and calibrate optometric instruments
- Record exam findings accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) system
- Manage appointment scheduling and optimize patient flow
- Verify insurance coverage and assist with basic billing inquiries
- Support patient check-in and check-out processes, including payment collection
- Keep exam rooms organized and ensure operational readiness
- Maintain patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA standards
- Assist with inventory control and ordering of supplies
- Collaborate effectively with optometrists, technicians, and front office staff
- Adhere to clinic policies, procedures, and quality guidelines
Qualifications and Requirements
- At least six months of experience as an optometry, ophthalmic, or related clinical assistant
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Comfortable with direct patient interaction
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical setting
- Basic computer proficiency and openness to learning EHR systems
- Current CPR or BLS certification (maintained as active)
Additional Advantages
- Familiarity with vision insurance plans such as VSP, EyeMed, Medi-Cal
- Experience using pre-testing equipment including auto-refraction, tonometry, and retinal imaging
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are beneficial
- Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) is a plus but not mandatory
Compensation and Schedule
- Hourly wage ranging from $21 to $24
- Full-time schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
