About the Role
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service at HMP Isle of Wight as an Operational Support Grade (OSG), where you will be essential in ensuring the smooth daily operation of a busy prison environment. This role balances administrative responsibilities with physical duties such as security searches at the entrance, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV footage. Driving around the prison grounds to escort vehicles is also a critical part of the role, requiring a full, valid UK driving license.
Responsibilities
- Support daily prison operations by assisting with security protocols and supervising key entry points.
- Manage and oversee deliveries entering the site effectively and securely.
- Supervise visitors, ensuring they adhere to prison regulations.
- Monitor telephone calls and CCTV systems to maintain security standards.
- Perform driving tasks within the prison to escort vehicles as required.
- Engage in physical activities including lifting, carrying, and walking across the grounds.
- Work shift patterns that include weekends and nights to maintain constant operational coverage.
Candidate Profile
This role does not require formal qualifications but expects excellent communication skills, good judgment, calmness under pressure, and the ability to work cooperatively within a team. Limited prisoner contact may occur depending on location, but the primary focus is on operational support.
Career Prospects
The OSG position offers valuable insight into prison operations and can pave the way to progression into other roles within the prison system, including potential advancement into prison officer roles through an internal conversion scheme.
