Overview
A Naval Service General Service Recruit enlists in the maritime branch of the Irish Defence Forces, undertaking training to develop military discipline, physical fitness, seamanship, weapons handling, and naval operational skills. Successful candidates become part of a professional team safeguarding Ireland’s territorial waters.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete a 13-week basic recruit training program to build physical fitness, discipline, and fundamental military skills.
- Undergo branch-specific training in areas such as Seamanship, Communications, Mechanics, or Supplies following initial recruitment training.
- Upon qualification, serve as an Able Rate on a Naval Service ship and participate in a two-year rotation at sea.
- Perform duties that include general ship maintenance, boat operations, firefighting, damage control, and engagement in naval boarding teams during drug interdiction efforts.
- Avail additional training opportunities aimed at specialization and career progression within the Naval Service.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be aged between 18 and under 39 years, with official proof of age required during selection.
- Minimum height requirement is 5 feet 2 inches (157.48 cm), to be verified during the selection process.
- No visible tattoos above the collar line while on duty; verification during recruitment will disqualify candidates with visible tattoos above this area.
- Must have a valid right to work in Ireland for at least five years, evidenced by appropriate permit documentation.
- Candidates need to fulfill medical, physical, and security clearance assessments during recruitment.
Work Environment and Conditions
Recruits should possess a strong motivation for working within a disciplined military setting, demonstrate a commitment to teamwork, and have the ability to operate effectively under physically demanding and high-pressure situations. A readiness to deploy at sea with the Irish Naval Service is essential. The permanent base for this role is the Naval Base at Haulbowline, County Cork.
