Job description

Role Overview

The Learning Support Teacher (LST) plays a critical role in assisting pupils who require additional aid to engage with the curriculum effectively. This position demands tailored adaptation of educational content and resources to accommodate students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEN/D) as well as other learning gaps.

Core Responsibilities

  • Modify teaching materials and assignments for learners with various needs.
  • Incorporate assistive technologies such as readers, laptops, visual timetables, and hands-on manipulatives.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop differentiated lesson plans and strategies tailored to student requirements.
  • Coordinate with Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCO) or Inclusion Leads regarding assessments, referrals, and intervention strategies.
  • Engage with parents regularly to communicate student progress and recommend supportive measures for home use.
  • Partner with external specialists including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists.

Assessment and Documentation

  • Track students' academic progress meticulously and maintain comprehensive records.
  • Identify learning barriers and propose suitable interventions.
  • Assist in administering screening tests and analyzing progress data.

Classroom Environment

  • Establish an inclusive, supportive atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Encourage student independence, boost self-esteem, and foster positive behaviors.
  • Demonstrate and model best practices for inclusion within the classroom setting.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Exhibit patience, empathy, and adaptability in teaching approaches.
  • Possess a deep understanding of diverse learning challenges including Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dyspraxia, and English as an Additional Language (EAL).
  • Apply differentiated instructional strategies effectively.
  • Maintain excellent communication lines with teachers, parents, and students.
  • Be well-organized with strong skills in record-keeping and managing time efficiently.
