About the Role
This position is an internal opportunity exclusively available to former Multnomah County employees currently listed on an active recall list. Applicants who are existing employees should submit their applications via the employee portal to be eligible.
The role is within the Sheriff's Department as a regular, exempt, non-represented law enforcement lieutenant, with an annual pay range of $122,874.14 to $196,598.08. Compensation considers applicant experience and tenure, with competitive pay reflecting oversight responsibilities and total compensation including overtime and premium pay.

Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain a positive and safe workplace through inclusive communication and teamwork, exemplifying agency diversity, equity, and inclusion values.
- Build and sustain positive community relationships by attending and organizing engagement activities, serving as an exemplary representative of the Sheriff's Office.
- Plan, organize, and manage law enforcement operations within assigned units or projects, overseeing daily operational matters.
- Develop and manage complex budgets, including providing recommendations and adjustments as necessary.
- Formulate, review, and enforce comprehensive policies and standard operating procedures.
- Direct subordinate supervisors in planning, prioritizing, assigning, supervising, training, and evaluating a diverse workforce’s work.
- Promote intergovernmental awareness and foster cooperative relationships with county departments, professional associations, and community groups; serve on committees, interagency collaborations, and special initiatives.
- Guide and mentor personnel by offering professional development and career advancement assistance.
- Operate with minimal supervision, remain accessible for after-hours communications, and provide command response during critical or assigned incidents.
Qualifications
- Must be a current Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Sergeant who has successfully completed probation by June 30, 2026.
- Within one year of lieutenant appointment, must earn 90 college credits from an accredited institution to fulfill DPSST Management Certificate requirements.
- Failure to meet the education credit requirement within one year will result in demotion.
Application Process and Requirements
Candidates must submit a complete online application explaining all relevant experience, including current roles. - Professional Standards Records and PREA background checks
- Command Staff interview
- Applicants must have a clean disciplinary and performance record.
Additional Information
Participation in the recruitment process, including preparation and appointments, cannot be during duty time or compensated by overtime. School attendance dates are not required in applications.
