Job Overview

Working under the supervision of the Executive Chef or assigned kitchen leadership, the Kitchen Helper plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation within the food service environment. This position focuses primarily on the thorough cleaning of dishware, cookware, utensils, and kitchen equipment used during food preparation and service.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Efficiently clean and sanitize all dishes, pots, pans, and utensils following appropriate procedures.
  • Operate commercial dishwashing machinery and perform manual scrubbing of large kitchen items.
  • Maintain sanitation of kitchen surfaces, floors, walls, and all related equipment.
  • Prepare dishware for washing by pre-scrubbing and sorting items prior to cleaning.
  • Keep dishwashing machines clean by routinely clearing drains and filters.
  • Monitor and manage cleaning chemical levels, ensuring proper storage and handling.
  • Handle waste removal, ensuring trash is properly secured and disposed of in designated containers.
  • Sweep, mop, and sanitize food preparation and washing areas to maintain hygiene.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety standards, including WHMIS guidelines and Occupational Health & Safety Act regulations.
  • Identify and report safety concerns, equipment malfunctions, or hazardous conditions promptly.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with coworkers and patrons.
  • Comply with all casino, provincial, and federal laws, policies, and procedures relevant to the role.
  • Participate in required safety training programs and apply learned practices consistently.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Basic knowledge of foodservice operations and cleanliness standards.
  • Prior dishwashing experience is advantageous but not mandatory as training will be provided.
  • Ability to function effectively both independently and as part of a culturally diverse team.
  • Commitment to taking direction and accountability for one’s actions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in a noisy, fast-paced environment.
  • Physical capability to stand for long durations, perform repetitive tasks, lift heavy items, bend, kneel, and withstand heat and chemical exposure.
  • Skills in mentoring and training new employees are desirable.
  • Willingness to work in a smoking-permitted environment and available for shift work.
