Position Overview
The General Surgery and Urology Department at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is offering five Junior Clinical Fellow (FY3 level) positions starting in August 2026 for a period of four months, ending in December 2026. These roles will be distributed across Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI), Vascular, and Urology specialties. These positions provide excellent exposure to a busy clinical environment managing both elective and emergency cases.
Key Responsibilities
Junior Clinical Fellows will support the surgical teams by participating in ward rounds and theatre sessions, with some posts including involvement in the General Surgery F2/CT emergency rota. The roles involve providing medical care to inpatients and assisting with day case and elective surgeries.
Learning and Development
Although these are not formal training posts, the positions are well supervised and present valuable opportunities to develop clinical skills and gain experience in surgical specialties. Ongoing professional and leadership development support is available throughout the term.
Work Environment
These roles are based at the Royal Derby Hospital, which offers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and day case surgical services. The General Surgery and Urology Department is known for high patient throughput with a significant volume of both elective and emergency cases.
Eligibility Criteria
- Completion of Foundation Training is required.
- Ideally, candidates should have prior experience working in general surgery.
- Possession of an MBBS degree is mandatory.
- Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration along with a licence to practice is essential at the time of application.
