Role Overview
The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI)/Coding Consultant plays a crucial role in reviewing clinical documentation to verify its completeness, precision, and alignment with coding and regulatory standards, ensuring accurate coding and Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) assignment. Working internationally as part of Solventum's CDI consulting team, this position involves auditing patient charts, educating client CDI teams, and enhancing documentation standards and program effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform retrospective review of inpatient and outpatient charts to validate the accuracy and specificity of clinical records.
- Apply expertise in ICD-10 codes, procedure codes, and DRG classification systems to identify documentation and coding shortcomings.
- Utilize medical terminology and procedural knowledge to assess opportunities for improving documentation.
- Observe and shadow physicians, coding, and CDI staff to understand and evaluate existing working methods and documentation practices.
- Conduct interviews with stakeholders, including CDI teams, coders, clinicians, and department heads, to identify documentation challenges.
- Assess hospital CDI processes, pinpointing areas for enhancement.
- Create structured queries and feedback to request clarifications or additional documentation where needed.
- Compile audit results into detailed, actionable reports highlighting identified gaps, risks, and recommendations.
- Deliver knowledge transfer sessions to client teams, sharing best practices on documentation and compliance.
- Collaborate with project managers to maintain quality and consistency in project engagements.
- Ensure patient information confidentiality and data security at all times.
- Aggregate audit data and trends to prepare summaries for management and executive teams.
- Participate in meetings with key stakeholders to discuss findings and recommendations.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Associate degree or higher in nursing (preferably BSN), medicine, paramedical sciences, health information management, or a related clinical field.
- Certifications such as RHIA, RHIT, or other coding qualifications.
- Preferred: Valid CDI certification (CCDS, CDIP, or equivalent).
- At least three years of experience in CDI or clinical coding within hospitals or health systems.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10 coding, DRG methodologies, clinical coding principles, and applicable guidelines.
- Experience in reviewing clinical documentation and querying.
- Skilled in conducting structured interviews and workflow observations.
- Proficient in writing audit summaries and presenting findings effectively.
- Familiarity with computer applications including abstracting and encoding software, DRG grouper tools, and hospital information systems (HIS).
- Fluent in spoken and written English, with strong Microsoft Office skills.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Coding certifications such as AAPC, HIMAA, AHIMA, or equivalents.
- Health Information Management certifications like RHIA, RHIT, or CHIM.
- Experience in consulting, auditing, or providing third-party CDI services.
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and CDI software tools.
- Experience delivering training or knowledge transfer sessions to clinical or CDI teams.
- Multilingual skills including Arabic, Dutch, French, Portuguese, or German are advantageous.
Work Location and Travel
This role is primarily remote but requires significant international travel to client sites, approximately 50% to 75% of the time. Occasional visits to the Dubai office may be necessary. A valid passport is required. No relocation support is provided.
