Role overview
Independence Health System is seeking a Housekeeper to help keep hospital rooms, public spaces, and support areas clean, sanitary, and welcoming for patients, visitors, and staff. The role involves routine environmental services work using standard cleaning tools and methods, along with handling regulated and non-regulated waste and soiled linen in line with policy and regulatory requirements. If the supervisor is unavailable, the housekeeper will coordinate with the Lead Housekeeper, who acts as the department’s connection to management.
Sign-on bonus
This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus.
Key duties
- Clean and service assigned areas across the hospital or facility.
- Complete routine cleaning requests from customers within department scope.
- Carry out daily cleaning and upkeep of equipment and supplies.
- Maintain the hospital’s required cleanliness standards.
- Follow department cleaning routines and step-by-step work patterns.
- Collect and move regulated and non-regulated waste, soiled linens, and other materials to the proper locations according to department procedures and regulatory guidelines.
- Keep containers and liners secured and upright to reduce the risk of spills.
- Clean waste holding areas every day.
- Obtain, use, and replenish supplies in a cost-conscious way following hospital and department procedures.
- Record supplies taken or removed on the department inventory form accurately.
- Document work-related information clearly and correctly on all required forms.
- Communicate task status on forms and verbally to the shift charge person.
- Make sure all requested form fields are completed.
- Move furniture and equipment such as beds, chairs, and gurneys in patient areas.
- Follow directions from the charge person.
- Use resources carefully to avoid damage to surfaces and equipment.
- Take on other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Strong organizational ability and sound judgment.
- Ability to work independently and think through tasks on your own.
- Comfort handling multiple priorities and shifting assignments.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
License, certification, and clearances
- Act 34 Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system is required.
Schedule and working conditions
Scheduling is based on operational need and may include rotating shifts, standby coverage, and on-call duty. Local travel between Independence Health locations may also be required.
Supervisory scope
This role does not directly manage staff, but it may involve coaching and mentoring other department positions.
Work environment and physical demands
PPE such as goggles, a face shield, and a mask are required in line with CDC guidance during the pandemic period beginning March 2020 or as applicable. When a lift requirement exceeds 50 pounds, two-person lift assistance and/or a transfer device is required. The job may involve exposure to extreme heat and cold, heights, confined spaces, high noise levels, mechanical hazards, vibration, vehicles, heavy equipment, patient care areas, respirators, eye/head/hearing/hand/foot/body protection, latex, solvents, paint, dust, ethylene oxide, cytotoxic chemicals, blood and body fluids, direct chemical use, mist, wax stripper, non-ionizing and ionizing radiation, and laser exposure. Physical work may include bending, sitting, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, standing, kneeling, squatting, twisting, computer use, gripping, fine hand use, coordination, pushing and pulling, carrying, patient transfer, near vision, sensation, color vision, clear hearing, overhead and forward reaching, and lifting from floor to knuckle, seat pan to knuckle, knuckle to shoulder, and shoulder to overhead. The role may require rotating all shifts, 8-hour and 10-12-hour shifts, on-call coverage, overtime beyond 8 hours per shift or 40 hours per week, and travel between sites.
