Position Overview
Under the direction of the School Principal, the School Crossing Guard is responsible for managing vehicular and pedestrian traffic at designated locations to ensure the safety and orderly crossing of school children. This position involves implementing traffic control procedures on or off school property, in areas potentially subject to heavy and complex vehicle flows.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide clear and effective hand signals to halt vehicular and pedestrian movement until all pedestrians have safely crossed.
- Ensure all signals are understood and followed, guaranteeing that children cross only at approved spots.
- Identify and report any traffic hazards promptly to the Sheriff’s Office.
- Document any vehicle code violations and file reports when necessary.
- Participate in mandatory training sessions or meetings as instructed by supervisors or safety officials.
- Enforce school policies and discipline related to safe crossing behavior.
- Report unsafe crossing practices by students or pedestrians to supervisors.
- Exemplify and uphold the core values of Stafford County Public Schools.
- Engage in continual professional growth relevant to this role.
- Respond thoroughly and promptly to all information requests.
- Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance at all times.

Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Certification from the Sheriff’s Office for Crossing Guard duties is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with basic safety protocols for educational facilities.
- Understanding of safe driving procedures specifically for Crossing Guards.
- Effective communication techniques for interacting with children and adults.
- Proficiency in English language and grammar.
- Up-to-date knowledge of Virginia traffic laws and emergency response procedures.
- Completion of Handle with Care and First Aid/CPR/AED training.
- Able to direct traffic using arm and hand signals post training.
- Use of equipment such as stop signs, reflective vests, cones, whistles, gloves, and communication devices.
- Ability to assess traffic flow, speed, and travel direction to organize pedestrian movement logically.
- Dependable transportation, punctuality, and reliability.
- Capable of working independently and as part of a team to meet goals and deadlines.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and consistent quality in work.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions and busy roadways.
- Work may involve moderate noise levels and temperature extremes.
- Physical activities include standing and sitting for extended periods, repetitive hand and wrist movements, lifting up to 20 pounds, and recognizing colors and objects under different lighting conditions.
- Must have the mental ability to make logical decisions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
