Job description

About the Role

This full-time role at the Hedland Women's Refuge involves providing comprehensive support to women and children fleeing family violence. The service operates 24/7, so candidates must be prepared for day, afternoon, active night, weekend, and public holiday shifts. The Family Support Worker delivers specialist, risk-focused assistance and holistic, culturally sensitive support addressing safety, independence, wellbeing, housing, social inclusion, and employment needs.

Responsibilities

The incumbent collaborates with various service providers and stakeholders to help women and children achieve their goals while ensuring a trauma-informed and client-led approach.

Eligibility and Key Selection Criteria

  • Candidates must identify as female, in line with a genuine occupational qualification exemption under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 Section 27 (WA).
  • Preference is given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants under Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.
  • Relevant study or experience in community services or family and domestic violence, including lived or professional experience particularly among Aboriginal communities.
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal culture, values, and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal children, youth, and families.
  • Collaborative and constructive teamwork skills, as well as the ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment when working independently.
  • Awareness of trauma impacts on women and children affected by family violence.
  • Knowledge of cultural safety, child development, attachment, and trauma principles.

Additional Requirements

  • Current valid driver’s licence.
  • Satisfactory criminal history check (conducted and funded by employer).
  • Current employee Working with Children Check.
  • Valid NDIS Worker Screening Check, with assistance provided for application if needed.
