Role Overview

The Estimator position reports directly to the Estimating Manager and holds the responsibility for producing accurate, timely cost assessments for assigned projects within Aecon Utilities—a prominent North American utility infrastructure provider known for safe, reliable, and innovative solutions in electrical, telecommunications, pipeline distribution, and renewable energy sectors. The role includes creating comprehensive estimates, budgets, and schedules while managing associated risks and tracking the financial health of projects throughout their lifecycle.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the financial outcomes of awarded projects.
• Analyze contract documents, proposals, specifications, and addenda to prepare pricing.
• Communicate estimation details verbally and in writing with clients.
• Conduct site visits as necessary before preparing estimates.
• Coordinate with Operations personnel to gather necessary input.
• Perform quantity take-offs from construction drawings where applicable.
• Source and integrate pricing from suppliers into estimates.
• Calculate all cost components including labor, equipment, materials, rentals, and subcontractor expenses for tender submissions.
• Ensure tender submissions are complete and accurate.
• Manage the distribution of project documentation post-award.
• Provide on-site presence for major projects when required.
• Monitor, forecast, and report weekly on the financial and operational status of projects.
• Manage changes in project scope effectively.
• Coordinate invoicing and progress payments.
• Maintain detailed records and correspondence for ongoing and completed projects.
• Offer technical support to field staff as needed.
• Work collaboratively with Operations teams to promote project success and knowledge sharing.
• Maintain compliance with estimating procedures and processes throughout the department.
• Conduct post-bid and post-project analyses, ensuring learnings are communicated.
• Assist with preparation of Requests for Proposal (RFPs), tender submissions, prequalification packages, Requests for Quotes (RFQs), and Requests for Information (RFIs).
• Integrate Aecon's risk management practices in all estimating activities.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, and subcontractors serving as a key contact.
• Protect confidential and proprietary information.
• Keep estimating databases and systems current and accurate.
• Assist in training new estimating personnel.
• Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
• Contribute to ongoing development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and standards for the estimating department.
• Collect and report data related to defined business Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Qualifications and Skills

• Diploma or degree in Civil, Construction, or Electrical engineering or related field.
• At least five years of experience in estimating within the utility sector.
• Proficient in interpreting construction drawings and contract documents.
• Strong understanding of contract language, terms and conditions, bonding requirements, and related policies.
• Basic knowledge of job costing principles and accounting/reporting fundamentals is advantageous.
• Highly self-motivated with excellent organizational skills.
• Strong computer proficiency with MS Excel, Word, Project, Primavera P6, and estimating software.
• Effective oral and written communication capabilities.
• Ability to work precisely under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Flexible work schedule adaptability to meet project needs.
• Availability to be stationed on significant remote projects during construction phases.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate well within teams.
• Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel as necessary.

Additional Information

This position is a replacement role with an anticipated salary range of $80,000 to $110,000 per annum. Salaries depend on factors including geography, education, experience, skills, certifications, and job complexity.
