About the Role

We seek an experienced professional proficient in envelope manufacturing, specifically in operating and maintaining vintage envelope machinery. The core machine is a W&D 327 from 1977, which, while older, remains a reliable asset supported by a stock of spare parts and a backup machine. If you have hands-on expertise in die cutting, machine adjustments, and envelope production, you are the ideal candidate for this full-time position at our Bassendean facility in Perth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the Sysco rise and fall die press to cut envelope blanks prepared for the production machines.
  • Set up and fine-tune the W&D 327 envelope machine to produce various envelope sizes, managing all adjustments as blanks progress through the process.
  • Manage production runs varying between 5,000 and 50,000 envelopes, often replenishing stock in multiple colors of premium German and Japanese specialist papers (100gsm to 130gsm). Larger runs coincide with new paper shipments, while typically one size change occurs weekly.
  • Perform routine maintenance, mechanical diagnostics, and coordinate repairs, with many tasks handled in-house supported by an external engineer as needed.
  • Ensure correct application of different types of gum including seal, back, window, or specialty gums relevant to the job.
  • Pick flat sheet stock utilizing the picking ladder and forklift, noting and reporting any inventory discrepancies.
  • Monitor quality across cutting, folding, printing, gumming, and additional attachments to maintain high standards.
  • Manage inventory levels for glues and envelope boxes and alert management when supplies need replenishment.
  • Mentor and train the current assistant operator, advancing their skills in die cutting and comprehensive envelope production techniques.
  • Keep detailed records of machine repairs, adjustments, and daily production paperwork.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

  • Extensive practical experience in operating envelope manufacturing machinery, including die cutting and machine setup.
  • Strong mechanical skills to undertake troubleshooting and minor repairs independently.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously.
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with a focus on precision and quality outputs.
  • Physical stamina and excellent hand-eye coordination required for continuous machinery operation and stock handling.
  • A positive attitude paired with a sense of humor and the desire for a long-term, stable role.
