Role overview

Lumwana Mining Company is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a major transformation of its engineering and maintenance capability. This is a high-impact leadership role focused on building a world-class function rather than maintaining an existing steady state.

The role carries full accountability for engineering and maintenance across the fixed plant copper process plant as well as the heavy mobile equipment and light mobile equipment fleets. The successful candidate will help create the systems, organisational capability, and reliability culture required to support a near doubling of operations.

Reporting to the General Manager and sitting on the site leadership team, you will oversee all engineering and maintenance work to keep equipment and infrastructure safe, dependable, and efficient during a period of major growth. You will shape the engineering strategy, maintenance programmes, and capital projects needed to lift asset performance, reduce downtime, and support production goals. The position also requires driving stronger asset management practices, preparing expansion assets for operational handover, growing a larger local engineering workforce, and ensuring compliance with mining laws and engineering standards while improving cost performance and capability.

What the role involves

  • Lead engineering and maintenance activities across fixed plant and the mobile fleet with a strong focus on safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Strengthen the site’s maintenance maturity by moving from reactive practices toward proactive and predictive methods.
  • Improve reliability of critical assets so production interruptions are avoided and planned throughput is achieved.
  • Plan and execute maintenance within the annual budget while maintaining high standards of workmanship and asset care.
  • Support lifecycle decisions through costing analysis for major equipment, including replacement, refurbishment, and component changes.
  • Improve planning and scheduling for routine work, shutdowns, and outages to reduce business disruption and cost.
  • Embed disciplined SAP-based planning and reliability routines aligned to regional maintenance and systems standards.
  • Develop and deliver capital expenditure plans that support the Life of Mine plan and the Super Pit Expansion.
  • Oversee engineering readiness and safe handover of newly built and commissioned assets into stable operations.
  • Work with Supply Chain on demand planning and manage OEMs and contractors to improve service quality and reduce costs.
  • Build a resilient engineering organisation and develop a larger local talent pipeline to support expansion.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse local workforce, with a focus on increasing gender diversity where possible.
  • Invest in Zambian talent through coaching, skills transfer, mentoring, apprenticeship routes, graduate pathways, and succession planning.
  • Use technology, data analytics, visualisation, and automation to improve performance and align with the AME standard.
  • Identify long-term business challenges that can be solved with technology and create a roadmap for innovation.
  • Promote continuous improvement, flexibility, and cost optimisation across the engineering function.
  • Champion environmental, health, and safety standards across employees and contractors.
  • Develop emission reduction initiatives across the process plant, HME, and LME areas.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required.
  • A degree in Business Administration or Project Management will be an added advantage.
  • Membership with the Engineering Institute of Zambia is required.

Experience and leadership profile

  • At least 15 years of maintenance experience in mining is required.
  • At least 8 years must be in senior engineering or maintenance leadership roles.
  • Experience leading teams through significant operational growth or change is essential.
  • Experience with ultra-class equipment maintenance is preferred.
  • Proven background in maintaining large fixed process plants and heavy mobile equipment fleets is required.
  • Strong capability in asset management, reliability engineering, budgeting, and capital project delivery is expected.
  • Experience leading engineering and maintenance through a major expansion, ramp-up, or owner-operator transition is desirable.
  • Commissioning, operational readiness, or major project delivery experience is an advantage.
  • Strong leadership, people management, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills are required.

What the employer offers

  • A competitive compensation package that includes bonuses and site-based benefits.
  • The opportunity to contribute meaningfully and create lasting impact.
  • A collaborative, dynamic, progressive, and high-performance team environment.
  • Opportunities to learn and grow alongside industry peers.
  • Access to a wide range of career opportunities within the organisation.
