Job Overview

The BBC World Service is expanding its editorial workforce in Abuja to enhance its journalism amid changing media consumption trends in sub-Saharan Africa. The BBC Hausa service, a trusted news source for audiences in West Africa and the global diaspora, is transitioning to a digital-first, video-centric operation to effectively engage Hausa-speaking audiences who primarily access news through social media on smartphones.

Role Purpose

This position seeks skilled presenters to host a variety of visualised podcast shows, mainly for YouTube, alongside video content tailored for multiple digital platforms. The role goes beyond script reading, involving active participation throughout the content creation process—from pitching original story ideas to guiding editorial direction and overseeing production through to final delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Host high-quality visualised podcasts and live programs, delivering news, interviews, and features with clarity, authority, and engaging storytelling.
• Conduct research, develop, and perform exclusive interviews with political figures, experts, and influential personalities across Africa, offering insightful analysis that simplifies complex topics for audiences.
• Engage in content production collaboratively with editorial teams to shape programming that is relevant, accurate, and appealing to the audience.
• Increase audience engagement by facilitating live interactions, managing social media activities, and fostering community connections across digital platforms.
• Support content growth and promotion across YouTube, social media, and emerging platforms by recognizing trends and tapping opportunities to attract and retain viewers.
• Adopt innovation through the use of AI tools, advanced technologies, and creative formats to enhance storytelling quality, production workflow, and audience interaction.
• Represent BBC Hausa by building robust internal and external relationships, participating in events, maintaining diverse contacts, and advocating collaboration, inclusion, and audience-focused content.

Required Skills and Experience

• A respected journalist with a solid reputation across Africa for integrity, credibility, and adherence to high editorial standards.
• Fluency in English and Hausa, with excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of clarifying complex subjects for varied audiences.
• Demonstrated success in securing and conducting high-profile interviews with key figures in politics, business, entertainment, and sports across West Africa.
• Extensive broadcast journalism experience, including live hosting, visualised podcasting, and digital video production, with proven ability to attract and maintain large online audiences.
• Strong skills in interviewing, research, and analysis to unearth insights and transform complex information into engaging content.
• Comprehensive understanding of West Africa’s political, cultural, and social contexts, with sensitivity towards diverse perspectives.
• Sound editorial judgement with experience managing legal, compliance, and editorial policies in a dynamic newsroom setting.
