Role overview

Commonwealth Bank is hiring multiple Data Scientists for its People Analytics function, with roles available in Sydney and Melbourne. The team focuses on using data science, advanced analytics, AI and machine learning to improve workforce decision-making and employee experience.

This opportunity is suited to an analytical professional who enjoys tackling complex people and workforce problems through statistical modelling, machine learning and Generative AI. The work sits within Human Resources and supports a broad range of employee lifecycle topics, including capability, mobility, workforce planning and organisational effectiveness.

What the team does

People Analytics supports HR and business leaders with trusted insights, scalable analytical solutions and practical recommendations. The group combines human-centred thinking with analytics and emerging technologies to help the organisation understand workforce trends, anticipate future capability needs and make evidence-based decisions.

Human Resources at CommBank works across the employee lifecycle, including talent acquisition, leadership development, learning, internal mobility, employee relations, remuneration and benefits. As work continues to change through AI, automation and digital transformation, the People Analytics team helps leaders respond with better information and more informed planning.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with HR partners, business stakeholders and team members to turn workforce problems into analytics, machine learning and Generative AI opportunities.
  • Create AI and data science solutions that support workforce priorities such as skills, capability, workforce planning, employee experience, mobility and organisational performance.
  • Handle large and complex workforce datasets by carrying out cleaning, preparation, feature engineering, modelling, validation and interpretation.
  • Develop, test and assess machine learning and Generative AI models using suitable statistical techniques, evaluation measures and responsible AI principles.
  • Help deploy, monitor and continuously improve ML models and analytical products alongside senior data scientists and MLOps teams.
  • Use cloud services, data science tools and software engineering practices to build solutions that are scalable and maintainable.
  • Apply Generative AI tools to support coding, analysis, prompt design, summarisation and the blending of AI outputs with human judgement.
  • Turn analytical findings into clear stories, dashboards, reports and recommendations for HR leaders, Centres of Excellence and business stakeholders.
  • Follow ethical, privacy-conscious and explainable AI practices when working with sensitive people-related data.
  • Contribute reusable code, documentation, frameworks and knowledge sharing within the People Analytics Chapter.
  • Support and guide junior data scientists and analysts, helping strengthen data science and AI capability across the team.

What they are looking for

The preferred candidate will have strong foundations in statistical modelling, applied data science, machine learning and Generative AI. Comfort with Python or R, SQL and modern data science workflows is important, along with the ability to work effectively with large datasets.

Experience with AWS and cloud-based analytics workflows is valued, including familiarity with tools such as S3, SageMaker, Bedrock, Lambda and Glue, or similar platforms. Exposure to machine learning models, LLMs, Generative AI APIs or AI-enabled solutions is also desirable.

You should be able to clean and transform data for analysis, understand responsible AI and privacy requirements, and convert business questions into practical analytical approaches. Strong communication skills are needed to explain technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience with Tableau or Power BI is useful, as is knowledge of Git, MLOps, cloud platforms and software engineering practices.

Work environment and culture

The company offers training, modern technology, skilled colleagues and development opportunities. It is a skills-focused organisation that values growth mindset, diverse perspectives, respectful collaboration and flexible ways of working. The team is encouraged to contribute ideas, initiatives and energy, while making a positive impact for employees, communities and one another.
