About the opportunity
Toolkit Tutors is seeking CUNY students to join its New York City tutoring team. The organization partners with NYCDOE schools to deliver organized, high-impact academic support that helps students strengthen confidence, improve subject mastery, and prepare for exams.
The tutoring model is centered on small-group and one-on-one instruction across multiple subjects and grade levels. In addition to academic teaching, tutors also help students build stronger study habits, organization, and problem-solving skills so they can become more independent learners.
Work schedule and setting
This is a part-time, on-site role based at school locations during the school day. The schedule is typically 2 to 3 days per week, with 4 to 6 hours of work per day. Tutors generally work with 4 to 5 student groups each day. All curriculum and instructional materials are supplied by the employer.
Compensation and employment terms
This is a W2 position paying between $32 and $35 per hour, depending on experience. The role is paid weekly. The posting notes that this is roughly equivalent to $37 to $40 per hour in a 1099 arrangement after considering payroll taxes, paid sick time, and retirement match.
Responsibilities
- Lead structured tutoring sessions for small groups using Toolkit Tutors or school-provided lesson materials.
- Use student baseline data to adapt instruction to individual learning needs.
- Coach students on study strategies such as organization, problem-solving, and review methods.
- Record attendance and session notes each day using a personal mobile device.
- Maintain professional communication with school personnel and Toolkit Tutors leadership.
Requirements
- A completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or a degree that is nearing completion, with strong academic results.
- At least 1 year of experience tutoring or teaching in a school-based environment.
- Solid command of the subjects you will support.
- Experience working in urban school communities and awareness of common student barriers.
- Dependability, punctuality, and a genuine commitment to student progress.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to keep students engaged.
- Ability to travel to assigned school sites in New York City.
- DOE fingerprint clearance is strongly preferred.
Benefits
- Hourly compensation of $32 to $35, with weekly pay.
- Paid sick leave.
- Paid onboarding training and ongoing professional development.
- All teaching curriculum and materials provided.
- Employee 401(k) plan with a 50% employer match, capped at 5% of wages.
