About the Internship and Company

Gray Mobility is innovating the future of commercial electric vehicles targeting emerging markets, focusing on delivering electric vans and trucks that prioritize safety, reliability, uptime, excellence in quality, and cost-effective ownership. As a Product Quality & Reliability Engineering Intern, you will collaborate with seasoned product engineers, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and company founders to ensure our products meet global automotive quality benchmarks from the outset. Unlike traditional quality assurance internships that focus on post-production inspection, this role emphasizes integrating quality into product design from the beginning.

Role Overview

You will contribute to enhancing various aspects of product quality, including reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and durability across vehicle subsystems such as chassis, body, battery, thermal management, powertrain, interiors, and electrical components. Your responsibilities will span activities from design evaluation, supplier collaboration, validation and testing, manufacturing quality assurance, to continuous quality improvement, ensuring all components fulfill Gray Mobility’s stringent quality standards before reaching customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate designs from quality and reliability angles.
  • Support design improvements for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and overall reliability.
  • Identify early-stage potential quality issues during product development cycles.
  • Engage actively in engineering design review processes.
  • Assist with reliability planning and investigate failure mechanisms, including fatigue, corrosion, vibration, thermal, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Develop and maintain FMEA documents (Design and Process), control plans, and risk tracking registers, ensuring resolution of identified risks.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers to enhance incoming part quality and participate in supplier quality assessments and APQP activities.
  • Support validation test planning, assist in testing components and subsystems, analyze failures, and recommend corrective measures.
  • Contribute to manufacturing process reviews, recommend improvements for assembly quality, and help develop inspection standards and quality checkpoints.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions, engaging in Kaizen and other continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Help establish best practices and future design standards focused on zero-defect manufacturing.

Preferred Knowledge and Tools

  • Understanding of mechanical design, automotive engineering principles, GD&T, material selection, sheet metal and plastic part design.
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering fundamentals, statistical quality control, root cause analysis, and quality management tools like DFMEA, PFMEA, APQP, PPAP, control plans, MSA, SPC.
  • Experience with design reviews, tolerance stack-up, fastener and failure analysis, vehicle validation, and design verification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of automotive standards such as IATF 16949, AIAG Core Tools, ISO 9001, or ISO 26262 is advantageous though not mandatory.
  • Exposure to CAD and productivity software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, NX, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and optionally Minitab, Jira, and Confluence.

Candidate Profile and Learning Opportunities

  • Analytical mindset with a passion for understanding product failures and improving them.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong documentation abilities.
  • Capacity to work cross-functionally with design engineers, suppliers, and production teams.
  • Preparedness to visit suppliers, manufacturing, and testing facilities as required.
  • Motivation to contribute actively towards developing world-class, high-quality products.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to end-to-end automotive product development processes, global quality standards, supplier quality management, product validation, reliability engineering methodologies, FMEA and risk management, manufacturing engineering, APQP, and PPAP protocols.
  • Contribute to achieving vehicle qualities including enhanced safety, reliability, durability, serviceability, manufacturability, and reduced total cost of ownership, all embedded with a "quality by design" philosophy.

Internship Details and Benefits

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Location: Bangalore (Onsite)
  • Stipend: INR 10,000 to 15,000 per month
