Job description

Role Overview

This position emphasizes the development and diagnostics of low-level Windows platform software across applications, the operating system, drivers, and firmware. The engineer will architect and implement Windows system utilities that gather, analyze, and present detailed platform telemetry, and will spearhead in-depth debugging and root cause investigation for performance, power efficiency, and system stability challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in the entire software development lifecycle for Windows system tools and components, from conception and design through development, rigorous testing, and integration.
  • Create Windows desktop and system utility applications employing C# and C++ (using WPF or similar UI frameworks where applicable) to collect and visualize system-level telemetry data.
  • Access and merge low-level Windows platform data from sources like WMI, Win32 API, ETW, performance counters, and hardware interfaces.
  • Conduct multi-layer debugging and comprehensive root cause analyses spanning application, OS, driver, and firmware levels.
  • Perform Windows performance and power usage analysis leveraging WPA, WPR, ADK, and ETW traces.
  • Correlate user-mode and kernel-mode trace data to identify factors affecting responsiveness, system stability, and idle power states.
  • Examine Windows services, processes, drivers, and underlying platform power management features including S0ix/DRIPS and various device and CPU power states.
  • Investigate ACPI event flows as well as BIOS and firmware interactions concerning platform power state transitions.
  • Develop diagnostic utilities, scripts, and automation tools to optimize debugging and telemetry collection processes.
  • Lead bug triage procedures, define debugging strategies, and conduct technical deep-dives during product development cycles.
  • Partner closely with project managers, QA teams, firmware, and platform specialists to refine technical requirements and scope debugging efforts.
  • Proactively explore uncharted areas of Windows internals or platform behaviors and advise on viable technical solutions.
  • Produce well-structured, maintainable, and clean code adhering to industry best practices and design patterns.
  • Complete thorough self-validation and testing prior to releasing solutions.
  • Contribute to comprehensive technical documentation, design discussions, and code reviews.

Required Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of Windows internals including process and thread models, Windows services architecture, driver frameworks, kernel versus user mode execution, and Windows power management systems.
  • Proven experience in Windows system programming with focus on system telemetry, performance counters, Win32 API, Registry, and WMI.
  • Hands-on familiarity with system-level debugging and tracing tools such as WPA, WPR, ETW, Windows ADK, and WinDbg.
  • Working knowledge of ACPI and firmware/BIOS design elements including device enumeration, power state transitions, and platform event management.
  • Proficient programming skills in C++ and C# are highly desirable.
  • Experience developing diagnostic or system tools for Windows environments.
  • Strong foundation in software architecture principles and design patterns, with emphasis on code readability, maintainability, and testability.
  • Comfortable with source control methodologies and software development lifecycles.
  • Exposure to automated testing including unit and integration testing is advantageous.
  • Excellent analytical aptitude coupled with a persistent root-cause problem solving approach.
  • Ability to independently manage technical investigations while maintaining effective cross-team collaboration.
  • Solid communication skills in English, both verbal and written.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in troubleshooting Windows platform performance and power related issues.
  • Experience relating and syncing software, driver, and firmware behaviors during analysis.
  • Development experience with telemetry or performance analytics tools.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python to assist diagnostic and automation tasks.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related disciplines.
  • Typically over 10 years of professional experience in Windows system or software development.
  • Demonstrated expertise in low-level debugging, system diagnostics, and cross-layer issue resolution.
  • Proven ability to clarify requirements and function autonomously, combined with effective teamwork capabilities.
