WAN Engineer - SD-WAN / Hybrid WAN

About the Role

This position involves designing, deploying, migrating, and optimizing cutting-edge enterprise WAN environments, specifically focusing on SD-WAN and hybrid WAN architectures across branch offices, data centers, cloud platforms, and internet edge networks.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement WAN, SD-WAN, and hybrid WAN solutions tailored to enterprise needs.
• Create architecture standards, configure devices, set feature and policy templates, and develop routing and segmentation strategies for SD-WAN networks.
• Plan and oversee WAN migration projects from traditional MPLS or legacy WAN setups to SD-WAN or hybrid WAN frameworks ensuring minimal impact on business continuity.
• Configure and test routing protocols, underlay circuits, overlay tunnels, traffic direction, direct internet access (DIA), quality of service (QoS), and application-based routing policies.
• Validate circuits, coordinate with ISPs, manage site onboarding, execute cutovers, plan rollbacks, and ensure stable post-migration operations.
• Troubleshoot advanced WAN and SD-WAN issues involving BGP, OSPF, OMP protocols, IPsec tunnels, latency, jitter, packet loss, failover, and policy enforcement.
• Integrate SD-WAN with cloud network connectivity solutions, secure access service edge (SASE/SSE) platforms, security tools, network monitoring, and IT service management systems.
• Develop comprehensive documentation including high-level and low-level designs, migration operating procedures, standard operating procedures, runbooks, migration trackers, operational handover files, and technical knowledge bases.
• Provide leadership and technical guidance to L1, L2, and L3 operations teams, mentor engineers, and assist with major incident management and root cause analysis.
• Drive ongoing enhancements through performance tuning, automation initiatives, analytics reviews, process standardization, and governance adherence.

Required Skills and Expertise

• Proficiency with Cisco Viptela, Cisco Meraki, Fortinet SD-WAN, Versa Networks, Silver Peak technologies.
• Strong understanding of BGP, OSPF, OMP routing protocols, MPLS, IPsec VPNs, DIA, QoS configurations, VRF, and traffic steering techniques.
• Experience with cloud networking platforms including Azure, AWS, GCP and tools such as Aviatrix.
• Familiarity with SASE/SSE concepts and solutions including Akamai, Zscaler, as well as monitoring, analytics platforms, and APIs.
• Automation knowledge involving Terraform, Ansible, and integrating ITSM processes.

Preferred Certifications

• CCNP Enterprise, Cisco SD-WAN Specialist, CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure.
• Fortinet NSE certification.
• Certifications related to Cisco Meraki, Azure/AWS networking.
• ITIL Foundation certification.
