Role overview

This position is centred on shaping, improving and sustaining the organisation’s design ecosystem so that digital experiences remain consistent, accessible and high quality. You will work with the Design System Lead and the Design System and Architecture team to help execute the design system roadmap and support its ongoing development.

The role involves close partnership with teams across UX, research, engineering, brand, content design and accessibility to ensure the system serves product teams, end users and contributors effectively.

Work location and arrangement

This is based in Manchester with a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the Design System Lead and Design System and Architecture team in delivering the design system plan and roadmap.
  • Help develop and improve the system’s foundations, components, patterns and supporting documentation.
  • Weigh immediate product needs against the long-term scalability and maintainability of the system.
  • Assist with governance practices and encourage effective contribution and adoption across teams.
  • Create, update and polish reusable components and patterns within a well-structured asset library.
  • Use systems thinking to manage hierarchy, composition and dependencies across components.
  • Maintain design tokens across colour, typography, spacing, motion and other core foundations.
  • Ensure visual alignment across components, patterns, templates and foundations.
  • Design components that are scalable, responsive, accessible and suitable for a range of use cases.
  • Keep naming, variants, states and version control consistent and well maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with UX, research, engineering, brand, content design and accessibility colleagues to build reusable solutions.
  • Coordinate with developers so design assets and coded components stay aligned.
  • Collect and apply feedback from stakeholders and product teams to drive ongoing improvements.
  • Take part in workshops, design reviews and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
  • Write and maintain clear guidance for components, patterns and how they should be used.
  • Document behaviours, variants, states and interaction rules.
  • Help uphold quality, consistency, accessibility and usability throughout the design ecosystem.
  • Maintain visual standards across typography, colour, iconography, spacing, motion and interaction design.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in UI, product or digital design.
  • Strong command of visual design principles, including layout, typography, colour, spacing and interaction design.
  • Confident using Figma and working in component-based design workflows.
  • Experience designing responsive interfaces for different platforms and device sizes.
  • Proven background in building and maintaining component libraries and design systems.
  • Good understanding of component hierarchy, composition and dependency management.
  • Hands-on experience with design tokens and core design principles.
  • Comfortable managing large asset libraries while preserving consistency across products.
  • Experience creating documentation for components, patterns and usage guidance.
  • Ability to think in systems and understand how design choices affect the wider product landscape.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions clearly.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
  • Understanding of implementation constraints and quality assurance workflows.
  • Nice-to-have experience with design-to-code and MCP workflows.
  • Familiarity with Storybook and Zeroheight is an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS and component-based development frameworks would be beneficial.
  • Experience contributing to design system governance is desirable.
  • Experience supporting multi-brand or multi-platform ecosystems is a plus.
