Trader - Market Making (Energy)

About the Role

Straits Financial Group is looking for an experienced Trader specializing in market making within the energy sector. This position is based in Singapore and requires on-site work. The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of energy markets and OTC trading, coupled with disciplined risk management and strong pricing acumen. Effective collaboration as part of a trading team to enhance overall desk performance is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide two-way pricing and liquidity in OTC energy markets, keeping bid/ask spreads competitive while managing inventory and exposure alongside the trading team.
• Actively oversee trading positions within agreed risk limits, coordinating with colleagues to monitor exposure and implement hedging strategies where necessary.
• Take responsibility for contributing to both individual and team trading profits and losses, working together to optimize risk-adjusted returns.
• Ensure precise trade booking, confirmations, and daily reconciliation of positions and P&L in collaboration with operations and risk management teams.
• Offer market insights, flow commentary, and pricing ideas to shape collective trading strategies and enhance market-making efficiency.
• Communicate with clients and counterparties to provide market context, pricing guidance, and tailored trade ideas aligned with current market conditions.
• Identify and contribute to improving inefficiencies in trading processes, risk monitoring, and reporting workflows.

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Energy, or related fields.
• Between 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in commodities trading, market making, energy markets, or similar roles.
• Experience working within OTC trading environments including quoting, execution, and position management.
• Knowledge of energy products such as crude oil, refined products, LNG, or related derivatives.
• Strong commercial judgement with the capability to price risk and uncover trading opportunities.
• Understanding of risk limits, daily P&L reporting, and position monitoring.
• Proficiency in Python or data analysis is a plus but not mandatory.
• Exemplary teamwork skills contributing actively towards shared trading goals.
• Ability to effectively manage live market risk while maintaining composure under pressure and balancing speed with discipline.
• A commercial mindset focused on collective outcomes rather than isolated achievements.
