Job description

Job Overview

The Structural Steel Fabricator is responsible for producing steel elements used in Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB). This role requires interpreting fabrication and shop drawings, accurately measuring and marking materials, fitting and assembling steel parts, and ensuring every fabricated item meets defined dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards while achieving production goals.

Core Responsibilities

  • Interpret fabrication drawings, sketches, cutting lists, and material specs to determine component requirements like dimensions and assembly details.
  • Verify material specifications, grades, and identification before starting fabrication, and consult supervisors to resolve any uncertainties in drawings.
  • Prepare for work by ensuring all tools, jigs, and equipment are appropriate and available.
  • Measure and mark steel plates, beams, columns, and other components precisely using standard measuring tools.
  • Inspect materials for flaws or damage to maintain quality standards and reduce waste by following cutting plans.
  • Assemble parts using jigs and fixtures, ensuring components are aligned, level, square, and fitted correctly before welding.
  • Perform minor adjustments to correct misalignments without damaging materials and collaborate with tack welders for secure assembly.
  • Support cutting, drilling, grinding, and edge preparation activities using appropriate tools and machines, focusing on preparing clean joints for welding.
  • Observe safety standards, only operate authorized equipment, and promptly report any defective tools or equipment malfunctions.
  • Meet production targets on daily, weekly, and monthly bases, coordinate effectively with team members, and report any issues that could affect production flow.
  • Maintain accurate production records, participate in shift handovers, and ensure smooth transfer of work updates to colleagues or supervisors.

Minimum Requirements and Experience

  • Relevant certifications such as NVTI, National Proficiency Certificate, City & Guilds, or equivalent in Welding and Fabrication or related technical fields.
  • Practical structural steel fabrication experience of at least two years, preferably within PEB plants, steel manufacturing facilities, or industrial workshops.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting fabrication drawings and using fabrication tools like clamps, jigs, and measuring devices.

Key Technical Skills

  • Ability to read intermediate-level structural fabrication drawings and understand fabrication symbols.
  • Precision in measurement, marking, and alignment of steel components using inspection tools such as squares, levels, and gauges.
  • Competence in preparing joints and surfaces for welding, maintaining geometric tolerances, and controlling distortion at weld locations.
  • Good knowledge of safety practices operating around heavy steel materials, cranes, and welding operations.
  • Skills to detect deviations or defects in fabrication work and take corrective measures.
