State Director, Colorado

Position Overview

This leadership role is situated within the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Department of the Interior, reporting directly to the Deputy Director for Administration and Programs. The State Director acts as the Bureau Director's on-site representative, managing and directing state-level activities aligned with broader federal objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the Bureau Director's direct extension onsite, overseeing all BLM operations within Colorado.
• Formulate state-wide program goals and prioritize initiatives balancing economic and social needs with natural resource conservation and protection.
• Provide executive leadership consistent with Bureau, Department, and Administration goals and policies.
• Serve as the primary liaison at the state level, facilitating meaningful tribal consultations and engaging with federal, state, and local government officials, private sector stakeholders, and community groups.
• Champion BLM's automation and modernization efforts within the state, deploying technology and systems to enhance program delivery and management tasks.
• Develop and oversee resource management, technical support, and administrative programs under the State Office jurisdiction following national policies and delegated authorities.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen and subject to a comprehensive background investigation.
• New SES appointees must complete a one-year probation.
• Required to file Public Financial Disclosure OGE-278 within 30 days.
• Pre- and post-employment drug testing may be necessary.
• Selection contingent upon Department of Interior approval and successful OPM structured interview for Executive Core Qualifications.
• Comply with Selective Service registration requirements if applicable.
• Prohibition on appointment of recent Executive Branch political appointees without OPM approval.
• Applicants must demonstrate commitment to American constitutional principles and good governance, free from discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion, or national origin.
• Resume must clearly reflect the Executive Core Qualifications and two Technical Qualifications relevant to leading statewide public land/resource management and policy implementation with intergovernmental collaboration.
• No formal education requirement stipulated.

Salary and compensation are determined based on various factors including current salary and applicable categorization within the Department's Senior Executive Service framework.
