About the role

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is seeking NMC-registered nurses to join its established Heart and Lung Directorate team in London. This opportunity sits within a specialist environment focused on delivering exceptional care for children and young people, while also offering the chance to grow in a fast-moving area supported by advanced technology.

The cardiac nursing service is entering a period of expansion and change. Over the next two years, the service plans to open a 16-bed high dependency unit, helping ensure children who need cardiac surgery receive care in the most appropriate setting and can be discharged in a timely way. This is a chance to contribute to that development and be part of a team shaping the future of cardiac care at the hospital.

Bear and Alligator wards together provide 24 beds, including 8 HDU beds, and care for cardiothoracic patients with conditions involving the heart, lungs, and trachea. The hospital is also the UK centre for paediatric pulmonary hypertension and provides specialist treatment for patients up to 18 years old. Common cases include children requiring CPAP, optiflow, chest drains, inotropes, TPN, blood transfusions, and pacemakers, as well as those needing care before and after heart or lung transplant.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver consistently high-quality nursing care to children, young people, and their families.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and review individual care programmes, while guiding other staff involved in this work.
  • Maintain a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for patients and families at all times.
  • Represent the child or young person’s interests by offering information, support, and referrals to appropriate services when needed.
  • Provide supervision and support to ward team members so that every patient receives suitable care.
  • Ensure medical instructions are carried out and that changes in patient condition are communicated to the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Support the teaching and hands-on training of learners and junior colleagues, working with universities to promote consistent professional standards.
  • Protect patient confidentiality throughout admission and treatment.
  • Document all care accurately and complete required records within agreed timelines, following Trust-approved documentation and standards set by NMC, CQC, and the Trust.
