Role Overview
Join Stats NZ in Christchurch or Wellington as a Statistical and Data Technician or Senior Technician. Your focus will be transforming raw data from various domains, including financial, economic, and social subjects, into improved, usable formats that support statistical production processes. Tasks involve loading, editing, validating, classifying, checking, and shaping data to ensure it is ready for decision-making in New Zealand.
Senior Position
The senior role demands tackling more complex validations, overseeing data processing delivery, innovating process enhancements, and mentoring junior technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Transform raw data through editing, classification, validation, and processing steps.
- Ensure data readiness for statistical production and informed decisions.
- Work collaboratively within the Complex Business & Processing Support Unit.
- For senior roles, lead improvements in workflows and mentor colleagues.
Candidate Profile
- Strong curiosity, problem-solving skills, and passion for process improvement and innovation.
- Experience handling financial account data or accounting-related roles is preferred.
- Excellent organisational skills to manage repetitive tasks with precision and troubleshoot issues.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines, manage time efficiently, and adapt to changing information.
- Comfortable with data processing systems and quick to learn new software or technologies.
- Team player with strong interpersonal and communication abilities, capable of presenting findings clearly.
- Committed to continuous learning and applying cultural awareness in work practices.

Salary Range
- Statistical & Data Technician: NZD 57,403 – 63,080 plus KiwiSaver.
- Senior Statistical & Data Technician: NZD 60,148 – 70,762 plus KiwiSaver.
Additional Information
- Positions available: Senior Statistical & Data Technician (1 permanent, 1 fixed term until December 2026), Statistical & Data Technician (1 permanent, part-time 20 hours/week).
- Based in Christchurch (Ōtautahi) or Wellington (Pōneke).
