Senior Policy Analyst

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Policy Analyst to spearhead the creation of high-quality advice for Ministers on complex, ambiguous, and sensitive policy matters. The role demands rigorous policy research and analysis using robust frameworks to formulate well-considered options and recommendations. You will oversee multiple intricate policy projects, including planning, risk management, reporting, and quality control.

Collaboration with delivery and implementation teams is key to ensuring practical implementation insights are incorporated early in the policy development cycle. You will also cultivate and influence relationships across government departments and external partners, contributing to unified policy directions when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the development and delivery of policy advice on multifaceted social, economic, regulatory, or related issues aimed at government decision-makers.
• Manage and guide several complex policy initiatives, ensuring rigorous planning, risk management, and quality assurance.
• Engage closely with implementation teams to integrate actionable advice during policy formulation stages.
• Develop and maintain influential collaborations across governmental agencies and external stakeholders, facilitating cross-sectoral policy alignment.

Candidate Profile

• Substantial experience directing public policy analysis and advising government on complicated topics.
• Strong familiarity with New Zealand’s governmental machinery and legislative procedures, including Cabinet and Budget processes.
• Proficient in applying a variety of quantitative and qualitative analytical methods correctly.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication capabilities with the skill to articulate complex matters clearly.
• Effective stakeholder management and influence abilities, adept at navigating differing viewpoints.
• Appreciation and sensitivity towards Māori cultural values and needs, with an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and their policy implications.
