About the Internship
This internship provides hands-on experience within an academic library setting, focusing on research services such as reference assistance, bibliographic instruction, publicity, and marketing efforts. Interns will explore foundational issues in reference and research services, contribute to their evaluation and enhancement, and become familiar with other library areas including technical services and special collections. The role requires working both independently and collaboratively on projects based on personal interests.
Key Daily Activities
- Instruction: Observe and participate in instruction sessions, design a workshop, and develop supplementary materials like pathfinders, libguides, or other educational resources. Required skills: presentation and organizational abilities.
- Reference Services: Assist patrons at the in-person reference desk and via virtual platforms. Prerequisite: completion of a Research Basics workshop or training on databases (can be completed during desk duties).
- Content Creation & User Engagement: Generate content for the University Libraries Blog, develop LibGuides and instructional materials, engage in research and assessment projects, and promote these activities within the Stony Brook community. Preferred skills: research experience and familiarity with WordPress.
- Publicity & Outreach: Support library promotion initiatives and suggest effective strategies for utilizing social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest tailored for academic libraries. Required skills: research capabilities and knowledge of social media tools.
