About the Opportunity
Join the Department of Conservation in a vital conservation role based on Rakiura Stewart Island, focused on studying the Critically Endangered Pukunui, also known as the Southern New Zealand Dotterel. This full-time, short-term position runs from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027 during the bird's breeding season, providing a hands-on chance to support species recovery through detailed field research.
Role Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive field surveys on Stewart Island.
- Monitor bird populations and nest conditions throughout the breeding period.
- Set up and maintain nest surveillance cameras to record behavioral data.
- Collect, manage, and systematically input field data for analysis.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in backcountry navigation, including off-track travel.
- Proficiency working solo in remote and exposed environments.
- Experience monitoring birds and their nesting behaviour.
- Aptitude in gathering and organizing accurate data records.
- Good physical fitness capable of carrying heavy packs during rugged fieldwork.
- Personable attitude with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant educational training or certification in conservation or ecological fields.
- Experience with bird handling techniques and banding.
Working Conditions and Terms
The role requires living and working primarily in remote hut and campsite settings within sub-alpine regions of Stewart Island. The roster follows a pattern of 10 consecutive work days followed by 4 days off. During off-duty periods, employees may stay anywhere of their choosing but are responsible for travel expenses to and from those locations. The Department provides ferry transportation to and from Invercargill and Stewart Island for rostered work shifts.
Compensation and Additional Information
Salary ranges from NZD 61,189 to 67,446 annually, commensurate with experience and skills. Eligibility requires holding a valid New Zealand work visa covering the employment duration.
