Role Overview
Tesla Energy is searching for a Process Engineer to lead the standardization of fulfillment and labor planning within its West Region warehouse facilities, centered at the Tracy, CA hub—one of North America's busiest fulfillment centers. This role combines process design, labor optimization, and material flow to develop scalable standards that enhance operational productivity while minimizing waste.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and standardize processes for fulfillment and labor planning that enhance associate productivity, smooth material movement, optimize equipment use, and improve inventory precision.
- Collaborate closely with site operators and leadership, building strong relationships to grasp daily operational realities and ensure that deployed standards effectively serve the workforce.
- Design straightforward, clear processes that eliminate unclear decision points, promote automation or centralization where possible, and provide consistent guidance without relying on informal knowledge.
- Create staffing models, workspace designs, standardized procedures, and process maps to enable consistent and scalable operations during steady activity or volume surges.
- Analyze fulfillment performance metrics such as labor output, picking rates, material availability, and inventory accuracy to derive insights that link processes to business goals.
- Perform time and motion studies, rebalance workloads, and model staffing to enhance operational efficiency and minimize unplanned overtime.
- Lead full-cycle implementation of new procedures, including pilot phases, network-wide rollouts, training subject matter experts, and maintaining compliance post-launch.
- Compare and benchmark fulfillment and labor planning practices at Tesla sites and across the industry to identify effective methods and reduce variability between locations.
- Continuously track weekly performance, identify early gaps, and drive corrective actions to prevent minor issues from escalating. Support weekly operational reviews through in-depth analysis and action planning tied to fulfillment and labor key performance indicators.
- Travel approximately 15-25% to regional sites to provide hands-on support during deployment and sustain strong collaboration with operators and regional leaders.
Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related discipline, or a minimum of three years' relevant experience in fulfillment operations, labor planning, inventory control or process engineering in warehousing or distribution.
- Proficient in Lean manufacturing principles including Takt Time, Cycle Time, 5S, JIT, work measurement, and continuous improvement frameworks, with demonstrated application in live operational environments.
- Strategic thinker with a focus on designing scalable processes that proactively remove waste and adapt as operational networks expand.
- Ability to link labor and process data to strategic business decisions, not only reporting figures but translating them into impactful actions.
- Strong analytical capabilities to collect, validate, and act on both quantitative metrics and qualitative operator feedback, treating anecdotal evidence as a starting point for deeper investigation.
- Excellent communication skills, able to simplify complex processes into clear documentation that is accessible and trusted by operators and stakeholders, ensuring consistent communication alongside execution.
- Self-managed and capable of handling multiple projects and stakeholders while maintaining focus on initiatives with the greatest long-term benefit.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Resourceful and tenacious, thriving in fast-paced settings with incomplete data, and motivated to find innovative solutions when straightforward approaches are blocked.
