Job description
Role Overview
At His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), we are seeking a dedicated Operational Support Grade to contribute to the efficient operation of HMP Bullingdon. With a salary of 30,491, this position involves both administrative and physical responsibilities essential to the daily functioning of the prison environment.
Key Duties
- Conduct security checks and searches at the prison entrance.
- Handle the reception and management of deliveries.
- Oversee visitor supervision protocols.
- Monitor communications through phone lines and CCTV systems.
- Perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles across facility grounds.
- Assist with various desk-based tasks related to prison operations.
Additional Role Information
The role demands reliable attendance with fixed shift timings, including weekends and night shifts. The prison's rural location might challenge public transport availability; therefore, owning a valid full UK driving licence inclusive of D1 vehicle category (allows driving vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, up to 8 meters in length, and trailer up to 750kg) is mandatory. While using personal transportation is advantageous, it is the applicant's responsibility to reliably commute for shifts.
Candidate Profile
Applicants need not possess formal qualifications but should demonstrate strong communication skills, composure during high-pressure situations, sharp judgment, and excellent teamwork abilities. Although direct interaction with inmates is limited compared to prison officers, occasional contact may occur depending on establishment needs.
Development and Benefits
- Comprehensive training programs to foster progression and skill development.
- Annual leave starting at 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rata calculated).
- Access to 9 additional bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Eligibility for a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Participation in the Civil Service pension scheme and access to season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Career Progression
This role provides valuable insight into prison operations and offers potential pathways to career advancement, including the possibility of transitioning from Operational Support Grade to Prison Officer through a conversion scheme.
Application Encouragement
If you align with the responsibilities and profile above, we invite you to apply for this unique and impactful opportunity to contribute to public safety and rehabilitation efforts.
