Job Overview

This position involves providing instructional assistance in physical education classes under direct supervision. The role focuses on supporting physical education teachers by implementing their lesson plans, managing large groups of students outdoors throughout the school day, and ensuring student safety and discipline.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver lessons prepared by physical education teachers to classes of at least 20 students, using planned activities and games outdoors.
• Assist teachers in setting up equipment and boundaries for physical education classes, resetting spaces between sessions, and properly storing equipment after use.
• Support in lesson planning and provide input during teachers' pre-planning to develop classroom activities and instructional tools.
• Maintain classroom discipline by managing student behavior, enforcing school and class rules, and referring students to administration when necessary.
• Assess student performance with objective measures and communicate findings to the physical education teacher.
• Create physical education department bulletin boards and displays showcasing student activities and achievements.
• Prepare or assist with instructional materials, including copying, laminating, typing, and filing.
• Record daily student attendance accurately.
• Coordinate with media center staff or curriculum resource teachers to access supplementary instructional materials related to physical fitness and education.
• Perform monitoring duties such as supervising hallways or bus and car areas, ensuring proper student conduct.
• Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of student data, often using computer systems.
• Stay updated on technology relevant to the role by attending district-provided training sessions.

Additional Information

This role involves both essential and marginal duties, with some tasks shared among team members. The position demands physical activity such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and handling equipment of moderate weight, and exposure to various environmental conditions including weather and noise. Required Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher, or at least 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university (official transcripts required). Alternatively, passing the paraprofessional certification exam to meet highly qualified status.
• At least one year of experience in physical education or related fields; athletic or sports-related experience is preferred.
• Ability to physically perform the tasks involved and attend effectively to the safety and needs of school-aged children.
• Previous vocational training or experience in licensed childcare environments is favorable.

• Competency in data management, including compiling, copying, recording, and transcribing information according to instructions.
• Skilled in guiding others and interpreting standards to specific situations.
• Proficient in using, operating, and transporting physical education equipment such as gymnastics apparatus, mats, basketball goals, balance beams, and vaults.
• Strong verbal communication, mathematical aptitude for basic calculations, and the ability to follow oral, written, or diagrammed instructions with some independent judgment.
• Capable of exercising decisiveness and creativity amidst routine and changing pre-defined duties.
