Job description
About the Role
The ASPIRE Peer Support Worker position operates within a faith-informed, confidential, and free peer support phone and text service designed to assist Muslim youth. Managed by Muslim Food Bank and Community Services (MFBCS), this program offers trained peer support that is non-therapeutic, focusing on crisis de-escalation and warm referrals for youth of all faiths.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond calmly and respectfully to incoming calls, texts, and chats without judgment.
- Evaluate risk factors including suicide, self-harm, violence, abuse, and safeguarding concerns following a structured protocol, escalating cases as necessary.
- Manage higher-risk and complex cases and serve as the primary responder in absence of volunteers.
- Support and coach volunteer peer supporters during shifts, including approval of emergency interventions.
- Collaboratively develop safety plans with service users and connect them to relevant community resources.
- Accurately document all interactions, submit incident reports, and conduct shift handovers.
- Coordinate with hospitals, law enforcement, and crisis teams when required.
Requirements
- Background in crisis support and ability to exercise sound judgment under pressure.
- Excellent listening skills and cultural sensitivity to support Muslim youth from diverse backgrounds and religious practices.
- Commitment to completing two references and a criminal record check at the vulnerable sector level or equivalent.
- Willingness to complete the organization's training program including suicide intervention prior to independent work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Personal lived experience within Muslim, newcomer, or mental health recovery communities.
- Proficiency in additional languages such as Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi, Farsi, or Somali.
