Job Opportunity Overview
The Managing Director of Flight Operations plays a pivotal role in leading and unifying industry stances on flight operations, training, and regulatory matters. This role works closely with various internal departments and acts as a key liaison representing member airlines before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), other government bodies, and industry groups. The Managing Director steers the Flight Operations Council, Flight Training Committee, and their associated working groups, fostering collaboration and partnership among stakeholders to promote safe and efficient flight operations in the U.S. airline industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent and advocate for Airlines for America's flight operations interests in alignment with the strategic plan before FAA and other agencies.
- Provide expert leadership and insights on flight operations to drive strategic and tactical airline priorities.
- Lead and organize the Flight Operations Council, Flight Training Committee, and relevant workgroups, including planning their agendas and meetings.
- Build and nurture relationships with member airlines, industry partners, government officials, and other stakeholders to develop coalitions and consensus positions.
- Offer subject matter expertise and cross-departmental support within the organization.
- Develop industry feedback and assist in federal regulatory rulemaking and advocacy efforts on operational matters.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must hold a transport pilot rating and have management experience in flight operations.
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience with a major airline, including at least two years in two or more of these areas: flight operations, flight standards, flight technical, flight training, or System Operations Control (SOC)/flight dispatch.
- Solid understanding of FARs, operational specifications, and related regulatory guidance.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate diverse teams and collaborate effectively with airline management, elected officials, and industry stakeholders to reach consensus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities; public speaking experience is preferred.
- Ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines reliably.
- Undergraduate degree required, preferably in aviation or related discipline.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications.
Work Environment
Employees are expected to work onsite Monday through Thursday. There is an option, subject to supervisor approval, to work remotely from home on Fridays.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is between $200,000 and $220,000, with starting salaries typically between the minimum and midpoint based on qualifications and experience.
