About The Australian Epilepsy Project
The Australian Epilepsy Project (AEP) is a nationally funded research initiative supported by The Florey and other partners, aiming to revolutionize epilepsy treatment using cutting-edge diagnostics, big data, machine learning, and innovative technologies. The Florey, with a 50-year legacy, is the Southern Hemisphere's leading brain research center dedicated to neurological and psychiatric disorders.
Role Overview
The AEP is looking for a Junior Data Scientist to join its expanding Technology and AI team. This fixed-term role—based in Heidelberg, Victoria—offers an outstanding opportunity to work with large, diverse healthcare datasets and apply machine learning to improve patient care and epilepsy research. The position involves close collaboration with researchers, clinicians, and AI leads to develop and implement machine learning models enhancing clinical decisions and research outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to identify opportunities for machine learning applications.
- Prepare and cleanse complex datasets including medical imaging, clinical records, cognitive assessments, genetics, and participant information.
- Develop, evaluate, and maintain machine learning models and analytical workflows.
- Design experiments to validate hypotheses in data science.
- Support integration and deployment of AI solutions into the project platform.
- Monitor and improve models in production and establish performance feedback systems.
- Contribute to documentation, quality control, and regulatory compliance processes.
- Advocate for best practices in data science within the organization.
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field.
- Hands-on experience applying machine learning and statistical approaches to real-world challenges.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Knowledge of contemporary machine learning techniques and workflows.
- Experience handling complex datasets.
- Familiarity with cloud computing environments.
- Experience with version control systems such as Git.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Preferred:
- Background in healthcare, biomedical research, or medical technology sectors.
- Understanding of epilepsy or neuroscience research.
- Experience with SQL and/or R programming languages.
- Knowledge of Agile development methodologies.
- Exposure to regulated environments, quality management, or Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) standards.
Additional Information
- Salary range: AUD 87,139 to 90,680 per annum plus up to 17% superannuation.
- Fixed-term contract until 31 December 2026.
- Position located in Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia.
- Visa sponsorship is not available; applicants must have valid Australian work rights.
- Successful candidates may be required to consent to a police check.
