About the Role
Join the Department of Conservation as an Investigation Officer and leverage your skills in law enforcement and investigations to protect New Zealand's unique wildlife, cultural heritage, and natural treasures. This role carries responsibility for conducting complex probes into violations of conservation laws, especially within the Auckland Marine district, including the area governed by the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Act, which includes 19 new marine protection areas and six existing marine reserves.
You'll engage closely with DOC rangers, providing coaching and support for enforcement actions, and work collaboratively across multiple DOC regions.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate reported compliance issues to determine investigation priorities, and cooperate with regional DOC management accordingly.
- Mentor and guide DOC Rangers authorized to enforce laws, particularly in compiling investigation files for prosecution.
- Review and ensure the quality of infringement fines and warning notices issued by enforcement-rangers.
- Conduct offender interviews, gather evidence, and prepare detailed investigation reports for serious offences.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with police, fisheries officers, district personnel, and iwi representatives.
- Present evidence in court as required.
- Travel extensively within the region; be prepared for occasional weekend or public holiday duties.
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum three years' operational enforcement and investigative experience within a regulatory or law enforcement agency.
- Proven ability to coach and support others engaged in investigations.
- Meticulous attention to detail and organizational capability.
- Self-driven with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with legislative frameworks and comfort working with legal professionals and law enforcement bodies.
- Experience in rural or community law enforcement is advantageous.
- Knowledge of the Marine Reserves Act is highly desirable.
- Valid New Zealand driver's licence.
Additional Information
Appointment requires passing and maintaining a Confidential Security Clearance. Significant travel and occasional work beyond standard hours will be part of the role.
