Role Overview

The Health and Safety Officer position is a full-time, on-site role located in Port Moresby. The primary objective is to foster and maintain a secure working environment across construction and project operations. Key responsibilities include conducting regular site inspections, performing risk assessments, and carrying out safety audits to ensure adherence to company policies, local laws, and industry benchmarks.

This role involves developing and enforcing health and safety procedures, supporting educational toolbox meetings, and providing safety training for personnel at all levels. The incumbent will investigate incidents and near misses, generate detailed reports, suggest corrective measures, and oversee the implementation of these actions. Maintaining accurate safety documentation, collaborating closely with project supervisors, and promoting a workplace culture focused on safety and ongoing improvement are also fundamental aspects of this role.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven expertise in Health & Safety, Occupational Health, and Workplace Safety, especially within construction or industrial settings.
  • Strong knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) principles, including risk assessments, hazard identification, and control measure implementation.
  • Possession of NEBOSH or an equivalent certified health and safety qualification, indicating formal training in safety management and compliance.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation, root cause analysis, reporting, and the ability to recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
  • Excellent communication and training capabilities to effectively deliver safety instructions, facilitate toolbox talks, and engage a diverse workforce.
  • High organizational aptitude in maintaining safety records, policies, and compliance documentation.
  • Educational background such as a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related disciplines is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with local safety regulations and standards in Port Moresby’s construction sector and flexibility to adapt to dynamic on-site project conditions.
