Job description

About the Opportunity

Air New Zealand is inviting external pilots to express interest in joining their jet fleet as a second officer on B787 or B777 aircraft, or a first officer on A320/A321 aircraft. The airline values pilots who demonstrate leadership, business understanding, exceptional customer service, strong problem-solving ability, and a positive, can-do attitude. Although internal pilots from turboprop fleets are given priority under the Regional Pilot Priority Process (RPPP), a limited number of external pilots meeting specific criteria may also be hired.

Eligibility Criteria

  • At least 12 months experience as a multi-crew, multi-turbine engine turboprop commander (Part 121 or 125 or equivalent), piloting aircraft with MCTOW of 7,765 kg or more (e.g., Beech 1900D) under IFR conditions;
  • Or at least 12 months as a jet first officer under Part 121 or 125 (or equivalent);
  • Or jet captain experience under Part 121 or 125 (or equivalent);
  • Or 12 months multi-crew, multi-turbine fixed-wing command experience with the RNZAF or equivalent military air force on aircraft comparable in weight to Part 121 or 125 turboprops.

Minimum Qualifications

  • NZCAA ATPL or CPL with current passes in all ATPL subjects;
  • Multi-Engine Instrument Rating;
  • NZCAA Class 1 Medical Certificate;
  • 1500 total flight hours, including at least 100 multi-engine airplane hours, 100 hours ATO, 40 hours instrument flight time, and 25 hours night time;
  • NZCAA BTK/BGT;
  • Level 6 or higher English Language Proficiency;
  • Must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen, permanent resident, or resident, with valid passport and visas for overseas travel;
  • Applicants with overseas-issued licenses must convert to NZCAA licenses before employment, though interviews may be offered beforehand;
  • Military applicants may receive exceptions.

Note: Candidates who have worked as turboprop pilots within Air New Zealand or its subsidiaries in the previous 8 years are ineligible.

Recruitment Process

  • Initial screening against minimum standards;
  • Completion of an online cognitive assessment;
  • Two-day assessment center in Auckland;
  • Pre-employment checks;
  • Offer of employment.

Additional Information

The jet fleet maintains a separate seniority list from turboprop pilots. External pilots joining the jet fleet enter at the lowest seniority rank, below internal turboprop transfers. Up to 10% of jet pilot hires are from external sources under normal hiring conditions, with a one-to-four ratio priority given to internal turboprop pilots.

Currently, no mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy applies to this role, but vaccination is strongly recommended due to travel requirements and potential future policies.

  • Flexible and part-time flying options;
  • Opportunity to apply for sabbaticals;
  • Fatigue mitigation and wellness resources;
  • Comprehensive insurance and generous sick leave;
