District Biologist - NC, SC, TN

Job Overview

The National Wild Turkey Federation is seeking a District Biologist to lead and implement conservation efforts across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. This full-time position supports the organization's mission by coordinating and delivering conservation initiatives on a large landscape scale in collaboration with various stakeholders including volunteers, state and federal agencies, NGOs, donors, and corporate partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary conservation representative within the designated district, managing all conservation activities.
• Participate in state and regional meetings to support NWTF chapters with resource allocation and conservation education.
• Coordinate the Hunting Heritage Super Fund and contribute to committee activities within the assigned states.
• Lead state policy tracking and engagement regarding hunting, conservation regulations, land use, and agency plans.
• Collaborate with development teams to identify funding needs and assist with major donor and corporate partnership cultivation.
• Engage with wildlife agencies through committee service and joint habitat projects on public and private lands.
• Source and secure funding from grants, stewardship contracts, and corporate sponsors for conservation projects.
• Develop and maintain corporate relationships to foster NWTF program growth.
• Support regional initiatives such as Roots to Roost and Habitat for the Hatch as part of strategic planning.
• Provide expert technical guidance on wild turkey biology and management for publications, websites, and multimedia channels.
• Gather and supply content for marketing and awareness efforts emphasizing conservation achievements.
• Lead grant and agreement proposal development, budgeting, monitoring, and reporting processes.
• Assist with wild turkey trap and transfer operations as necessary.
• Represent NWTF at annual conventions, conferences, and training events.

Development and Fundraising Support

• Identify and pursue federal, state, and local grant opportunities and foundation funding.
• Secure matching funds to meet grant obligations.
• Collaborate to cultivate conservation-focused corporate partnerships.
• Provide project impact data to support donor engagement and reporting.
• Participate in corporate relations activities including conservation tours and field experiences.
• Offer technical expertise for foundation grant submissions.

Communications and Outreach

• Regularly supply communications team with project stories, photographs, and updates for digital and print media.
• Create content for NWTF’s magazine, podcasts, webinars, and presentations.
• Develop easily understandable project fact sheets and conservation summaries.
• Support social media and digital strategies through field content.
• Maintain accurate records of conservation activities and share progress with leadership.
• Work with extension partners to translate research into practical guidance for landowners.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or related field with at least four years of professional experience, or Master’s degree with a minimum of two years of experience, or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of wildlife and habitat management, including game and non-game species ecology, population and harvest management, and forestry or grassland practices.
• Proficiency in grant writing, donor relations, corporate partnership development, and conservation communications preferred.
• Competent in public speaking, technical and general writing, and basic computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work independently, manage complex projects, and engage diverse stakeholders.
• Comfortable navigating remote, rural, and sometimes challenging environmental conditions; able to conduct fieldwork involving walking several miles and occasional lifting.
• Willingness to travel regularly, including overnight trips.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Extended desk work requiring computer use.
• Occasional lifting of objects up to 15 pounds.
• Working alone in varied and sometimes harsh weather conditions including extreme temperatures, insects, rough terrain, and remote locations.
• Frequent travel including long distances by vehicle and possible air or watercraft rides.

Location and Remote Working

This role is remote with a preference for residing within the district to better serve the area.
