Role overview
This leadership position oversees operations across transportation, flow-through, or warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids, MI; Chicago, IL; and Atlanta, GA. The selected candidate should be based in one of these locations, and during the first six months, most of the time will be spent in Grand Rapids, MI.
The Director of Operations is accountable for the overall performance and profitability of multiple sites. This person directs the day-to-day running of service centers to help deliver strong customer outcomes while meeting facility and company objectives for revenue, growth, sales, and service. The role also requires close partnership with employees, customer contacts, and internal support teams, along with active oversight of key metrics and continuous improvement efforts. Multiple Logistics Site Managers will report into this position.
Key accountabilities
- Lead all operational, administrative, financial, and customer service functions across several facilities.
- Drive revenue performance through sound operational planning and business growth efforts.
- Take ownership of financial results, including P&L performance and operating income targets.
- Be responsible for the site’s NOS performance results.
- Serve as the primary contact for multiple customers, including discussions around service levels, KPI targets, contract matters, renewals, pricing, and scope changes.
- Strengthen customer presence and engagement within the organization.
- Ensure all operations comply with relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA and DOT requirements.
- As needed, lead recruitment and/or contract staffing efforts to support current and forecasted business needs.
- Prepare weekly performance updates, review facility financials, and manage audit-related compliance for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Partner with sales and business development teams and help shape plans for onboarding, integrating, and managing existing as well as new business.
- Act as the connector between corporate teams and site staff while maintaining a clean, safe, healthy, and well-organized workplace and keeping facilities and equipment in good working condition.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Transportation & Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is required. The ideal candidate will bring at least 5 years of warehousing experience, whether in operations, sales, or a mix of both, and a strong history of managing distribution operations.
Applicants should also have familiarity with applicable state, federal, and international laws and regulations, including those related to the Federal Maritime Commissions, Interstate Commerce Commission, U.S. Customs, environmental compliance, import/export, maritime operations, and human resources.
Success in this role calls for strong leadership, business planning, financial analysis, negotiation, customer satisfaction, organization, and project management skills. The environment can be complex, fast-moving, and ambiguous, so the ability to adapt quickly is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and change management skills are also important, along with a demonstrated ability to resolve customer issues effectively and preserve business relationships. Alignment with the company’s core values and value promise is expected.
Additional qualifications
A master’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related discipline with a transportation or logistics focus is preferred. The role also calls for at least 5 years of supervisory experience, preferably including 3PL pre-sales support, plus 7 or more years of logistics experience. Willingness to travel is required.
Physical requirements
The work is mainly sedentary. While most tasks are performed while seated, the role may involve some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items up to 15 pounds.
Compensation
The stated salary range is $156,883 to $235,325 per year, with a midpoint of $196,104.
