Descrizione del lavoro

Role overview

This opportunity sits within HMRC’s Data Science Services Low/No Code team, a group focused on turning data into practical tools and insight using low-code and no-code technology. The work supports major departmental priorities, from helping ensure the right tax is collected and the right financial support is paid, to making it easier for customers to meet their obligations and contributing to wider economic goals.

The team works mainly with the Power Platform and uses it to build interactive applications, dashboards, automated processes, and AI-enabled solutions. These products are used every day by thousands of colleagues and help shape operational decisions across the organisation.

Day to day, you will work with data scientists, data engineers, and other technology professionals using tools such as Power Platform, R, and R Shiny. You will help create analytical products, perform statistical work, prepare and transform data, and present findings to stakeholders.

Key duties

  • Design and build low-code and no-code data science solutions.
  • Help define development standards for low-code and no-code work across Data Science.
  • Explore new ideas and innovations within the Power Platform ecosystem.
  • Support and grow networks across the wider citizen developer community.
  • Build apps that collect data and streamline processes.
  • Create automation solutions that improve how work is done.
  • Develop dashboards and visualisations that support analysis and evidence-based decisions.

What the role needs

The ideal person will be naturally curious, interested in data, and keen to keep learning. You should understand project delivery approaches, have awareness of ethical considerations, and be comfortable working with the tools and technologies used in the role.

You will need to explain technical ideas clearly to non-technical colleagues and also work effectively with technical specialists. Strong knowledge of Power Platform is expected, especially Power Apps and Power Automate.

Essential criteria

  • Practical experience of data science tools and methods, especially Power Apps and Power Automate.
  • Ability to create data science solutions using Power Platform tools that improve insight.
  • Experience spotting and leading opportunities for improvement and innovation.
  • Understanding of the organisation and how data science can create value.
  • Ability to work with others to identify user needs and deliver products using Power Platform.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to tailor analysis and visual outputs to different audiences.

Desirable knowledge

Experience with CoPilot Studio, AI Builder, or CoPilot Agents would be beneficial.

Location notes

Available locations include Leeds Regional Centre at Wellington Place, Liverpool Regional Centre at Water Street, and Manchester Regional Centre at Three New Bailey.

Due to workforce controls, the Liverpool location is only open to existing HMRC staff based there.

You should only choose a location that you are prepared and able to work from, as only one offer will be made and your location preference cannot be changed after submitting the application.

For Leeds, a Moves Adjustment Payment may be available if you are a current HMRC colleague in Bradford and meet the eligibility requirements in HMRC’s Moves Adjustment Payment guidance.

Selection process

HMRC will assess candidates using Success Profiles, looking at behaviours, experience, and technical skills.

The behaviours assessed at selection are Communicating and Influencing and Seeing the Big Picture. The application form only requires evidence for Communicating and Influencing.

Technical assessment will focus on Data Science Innovation and Delivering Business Impact. Candidates should be ready to provide examples showing practical use of Power Apps and Power Automate, as well as collaboration, user-focused delivery, and tailored communication of analysis and visualisations.

If there are many applicants, an initial sift may be based on the personal statement. At full sift, the CV, personal statement, behaviour statement, and technical statements will all be reviewed. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to interview.

Interviews will be held by video link. Sift and interview dates are to be confirmed.

How to apply

After the first stage of the application, you will be asked to complete a Civil Service Numerical Test. If you pass, you will move on to the final stage.

The online tests should be completed quickly, ideally within 24 to 48 hours, and enough time should be left to complete and submit the final application after the test.

The deadline for both the test and the application is 08/07/206 at 23:55.

The online tests for this campaign will not be available during 28 June 2026 from 4 pm to midnight UK time. You should avoid attempting the test during that period because technical issues may occur and support may not be available before the deadline.

Applicants must submit a name-blind CV covering job history and relevant achievements, a 250-word personal statement, a separate 250-word statement on Communicating and Influencing, and two 250-word technical statements. Desirable criteria may also be addressed in up to 250 words.

Important application guidance

Artificial intelligence tools may be used to support your application, but all examples and statements must be genuine, factually correct, and drawn from your own experience. If plagiarism is identified, applications may be withdrawn and internal candidates may face disciplinary action.

Please take care to complete the eligibility section correctly. If you notice an error, contact the recruitment team at least two working days before the vacancy closes. If you withdrew in error or need your application reinstated while the campaign is still live, contact unitybusinessservicesrecruitmentresults@hmrc.gov.uk and use the subject line format requested in the advert.
