Role Overview

This role involves more than traditional data engineering tasks. You will work closely with both business and technology teams to guide how data can be leveraged to solve problems, enhance outcomes, and encourage innovation. Working in a small team, your contributions will have visible impact and will support strong stakeholder relationships.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate business requirements into scalable and practical data engineering solutions.
• Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines, platforms, and reporting tools that align with business objectives.
• Collaborate with stakeholders from technology, customer operations, architecture, engineering, and broader business units.
• Assist in prioritizing and defining data needs to optimize delivery.
• Contribute to the ongoing modernization of Simply Energy's technology ecosystem.
• Ensure decision-making is informed by reliable, accessible, and meaningful data.
• Operate autonomously while actively sharing expertise within the team.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate embraces a natural curiosity, enjoys understanding system mechanics, and is confident about working with ambiguity and solving impactful problems. A key strength is the ability to connect technology to real-world business outcomes.

• Experienced in end-to-end data engineering and delivering robust data solutions.
• Skilled in interpreting and translating business needs into technical implementations.
• Knowledgeable in data platforms, pipelines, ETL processes, and data warehousing concepts.
• Comfortable interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and building trusted relationships.
• Proactive self-starter who works well independently within small teams.
• Resilient when navigating complex or unfamiliar environments.

Preferred but not required:

• Experience with Google Cloud Platform and BigQuery.
• Familiarity with the energy or utilities industry.
• Exposure to reporting, analytics, or business intelligence domains.
• Passion for utilizing data to promote sustainability and decarbonization.

Additional Information

The position supports flexible working arrangements from Contact Energy’s hubs in Wellington and Auckland, best suited for those able to work flexibly from these locations. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the closing date of August 4th.
