Program overview
This apprenticeship begins with a local group of apprentices who learn together during the first stage of the program. In the opening weeks, you will build familiarity with IBM, develop the core skills tied to the apprenticeship, and work alongside managers and mentors to follow a personalized learning plan. You will strengthen your knowledge through practical work with project teams and apply new competencies in real situations.
Role summary
As a Cyber Security Apprentice, you will be part of a Security Operations Center and help support clients by using modern security tools and technologies to defend against cyber threats. The role is hands-on and focused on monitoring, analysis, investigation, and the maintenance of security systems.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee client environments to help protect systems, information assets, and data.
- Watch for suspicious activity across networks and systems, analyze alerts, and respond to possible security incidents.
- Partner with different teams to investigate potential breaches, take action, and prepare reports as needed.
- Carry out ongoing monitoring work, including vulnerability reviews, manual configuration checks, and event analysis.
- Investigate incidents and security events, and test security tools and systems to uncover weaknesses.
- Evaluate network exposures and help identify vulnerabilities.
- Support the upkeep of the security infrastructure.
- Stay current on cyber trends, emerging threats, and known vulnerabilities.
- Install, set up, deploy, integrate, run, and maintain security toolsets.
Apprenticeship details
This is a registered apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labor. Graduates receive a nationally recognized credential from the DOL. The program includes required learning hours and on-the-job training designed to build the skills and competencies needed for the role. Most apprentices are expected to complete the learning path within 12 months. After graduation and receipt of the certificate, you may be eligible to apply for full-time roles at IBM.

Requirements and qualifications
- Commitment to complete the apprenticeship program requirements.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Some familiarity with one or more of the following: Windows or Linux operating systems, networking and infrastructure basics, Perl/PHP/Python or similar scripting languages, and cybersecurity fundamentals.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
- Drive to learn and build new capabilities.
- Capacity to work independently in an organized and efficient way.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Careful attention to detail.
- Solid troubleshooting ability.
Preferred background
- Associate’s degree or college diploma preferred.
- An associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is preferred.
- Exposure to consulting methods and techniques used to drive transformation and client value.
- Basic understanding of security programs and compliance expectations in leading organizations.
- Familiarity with advisory services and the role of a trusted advisor in client engagements.
