Position overview
The Massachusetts Trial Court is hiring a Custodian for the Taunton location. This is a Grade 5S union role with pay beginning at the entry-level rate in line with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The Facilities Management and Capital Planning department is responsible for operating and maintaining dozens of state-owned courthouses and leased sites across multiple counties, supporting the court system with reliable facilities and customer service.
Compensation
The pay band for this position runs from $39,779.74 to $58,629.48 per year. New hires start at $39,779.74 annually and may progress within the range according to the union agreement.
Schedule and work expectations
The regular shift for this role is 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The position is considered essential personnel during certain emergencies, so occasional work outside normal hours may be required, including early arrivals or late departures.
What the role involves
This position focuses on keeping court facilities clean, orderly, and accessible. Duties include routine custodial work, basic grounds care, support for maintenance tasks, and helping maintain a safe and professional environment for staff and visitors.
Key duties
- Clean floors, stairways, and carpeted areas using mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and proper safety signage.
- Strip, wax, and buff floors to maintain appearance and safety.
- Wipe down furniture, windows, mirrors, doors, and walls; empty waste baskets and remove trash.
- Sanitize restrooms and drinking fountains, and restock supplies and dispensers as needed.
- Use KAIVAC and IMOP cleaning equipment.
- Check lights, secure windows, and confirm building entrances are locked after cleaning or during routine checks.
- Report unusual activity and notify the supervisor when larger maintenance issues or repairs are needed.
- Move furniture to support cleaning, office transfers, and layout changes.
- Mow lawns, shovel snow, and clear sidewalks when necessary.
- Provide backup coverage for other custodians and complete additional assigned duties.
Work environment
Work may take place in offices, indoor facility areas, outdoor spaces, warehouses, file storage areas, and shop or facilities settings. The job includes frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
Physical requirements
This is a heavy-duty role that can involve lifting and moving significant weight, with demands of up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
Minimum qualifications
No degree is required. Candidates should have at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge and skills needed
Successful candidates should understand cleaning methods, cleaning products and tools, floor care, and the use of KAIVAC and IMOP equipment. Strong verbal and written communication skills are also important, along with the ability to handle a wide range of cleaning tasks.
