Role overview

This opportunity is for a Chair of Trustees who will also serve as a Trustee and Non-Executive Director. The post offers a chance to guide the strategic direction and future resilience of one of Scotland’s most highly regarded classical music ensembles.

What the role involves

The Chair leads the Board of Trustees, making sure it works effectively and fulfils its duties. Alongside the standard responsibilities of a trustee, this person will help set strategic priorities, build a strong culture of accountability, strengthen organisational performance, and uphold the highest standards of governance and integrity.

Working in partnership with the Chief Executive and fellow board members, the Chair helps ensure the organisation meets its governance, legal, charitable, and financial obligations while maintaining sound practice across all areas. The Chair will also represent the charity externally and act as an advocate with partners, funders, and wider networks.

Why the vacancy has come up

The position is open because the current Chair is stepping down after completing almost two full terms.

Time commitment and ways of working

The role requires around two days per month. This typically includes four board meetings each year, a strategy away day, and additional subcommittee meetings such as risk committee sessions when needed.

Board meetings are currently scheduled alternately in Edinburgh and Glasgow, with hybrid attendance available for remote participation.

Terms and appointment details

This is an unpaid position. Reasonable expenses will be covered. Appointments are made for a four-year term, with the possibility of serving a second term.

How to apply

Interested candidates should submit a brief covering letter of no more than one page explaining their interest and relevant background, together with either a link to their LinkedIn profile or a CV, plus contact details for two referees. Applications should be sent to Mark Batho by 12 noon on Monday 20 July.

Informal discussion

If you would like an informal conversation about the role, you can contact Mark Batho (Trustee) at markbatho@dunedin-consort.org.uk.
